   that question is pretty much impossible to answer. i live in Ontario Canada and i know 3 people who get medical marijuana. all three of them need it as far as i can tell. it beats pharmacy drugs by a long shot and it works well. one guy i know is back working because with the regular drugs he was given , he had a hard time functioning but with marijuana, he can work without any problems.

   As with every known prescription drug there are those that will always abuse them. 
   Most people who use prescription drugs do so as doctors order them and no more. We cannot condemn any program of public assistance because a few people find a way to exploit the system. 
   This problem is inherent in any government program, but is way more prevalent in programs giving relief, tax breaks, subsidies, kickbacks, etc... to the wealthy than what is exploited by the few who actually need the assistance.
   There is absolutely no logical reason for NOT legitimizing the use of Marijuana as there is no evidence that  this is actually a gateway drug to hardcore addiction. 
   Keeping this drug illegal makes as much sense as banning all legal prescriptions because some people "might" abuse that drug.

      I couldn't agree with you more. If you're interested, I have written an article here on hubpages that discusses the necessity to legalize marijuana. Not just for usage persons but also for financial purposes for the government to save and make money.

   I did.  I used to be a medical cannabis prescription holder, before I went to prison for drug trafficking and gun possession. I just paid some physician $200 to write me a prescription. I told him I had back pains or something like that. I completely faked it. I have no back pains, nor record of back pain. Most of the people I knew with prescriptions were just a bunch of stoners, too. However, I do believe marijuana has medicinal purposes. I watched a segment on You Tube by The Young Turks recently that mentioned scientist had discovered that a component in marijuana stops cancer from spreading.

   I think many are faking their illnesses to some extent because it is an easy way to have marijuana and not get in trouble. There really isn't any point in not allowing recreational use of the drug anyway so I think "faking" isn't a bad thing anyway. That being said, marijuana has so many medical uses including peace of mind so you could say that many patients are getting the medical benefits of using marijuana whether they know it or not. Additionally, marijuana is definitely a great drug for many cancer patients and anyone with a great deal of pain.

   Although I believe that there are people out there that do fake their "illnesses" there are millions of people across the U.S. that have legitimate problems that marijuana helps with the symptoms. A lot of people suffer from physical and mental illnesses that are incurable. Most people that don't have severe problems don't understand just how positive an effect it can have on those that need it. I know someone that has severe cases of PTSD and schizo-effective disorder. For those of you that don't know, that is the same thing as schizophrenia and bipolar. It's a deadly and dangerous combination. He has severe racing thoughts as well as he hears people yelling all the time, no matter where he is. When he smokes marijuana the voices go away. I used to not believe in medical marijuana but having seen it first hand the effects of before and after, I am a full believer now.

   It may appear so, but in a stress inducing world, most of us have some degree of Post Trauma Stress Disorder (PTSD) and it has been shown that some forms of cannabis is a relaxant and stress reducer. Given the current economic crisis and war fever, I'd say that access is more important than ever. Another point on "faking" an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure. Prevention is good medicine!
