Should high school girls be disciplined because they are distracting high school boys in school?
There are many stories in the news lately about high school girls outfits, or the way their figures look in them, that are too distracting for the boys.
They make a good argument that the boys should be disciplined the same or more, if they have issues with the girls looks.
In the era I grew up in most parents would never have purchased or allowed their kids to wear some of the clothes many wear to school.
Maybe the issue is schools have gotten too lax by focusing on individual expression instead of education. It might be time to instigate a more formal dress code or require uniforms.
Even in the workplace some people have different ideas of what passes for "business casual" these days. They often look like they're either going to the beach, to watch a game, or hitting a nightclub.
Both genders are guilty of this.
I see two problems here:
First, boys and girls should dress appropriately for school. I like that so many schools have gone to uniforms, whether it's traditional skirts/pants/jackets/ties, or just khakis and polo shirts or t-shirts for everyone. School becomes a little less about fashion and who has the money to buy designer duds, and a little more focused on other things---like studying, which is why kids are there.
Second, girls look cute in fashionable clothes. If that's distracting, perhaps we should be doing a better job of teaching boys to focus, and not blame girls for being a distraction. Why are we blaming the girls for the boys' lack of self-control and discipline? This sort of blaming and shaming carries over to adult life, when women get blamed for men's bad behavior, and shamed for wearing clothing that doesn't meet someone else's approval.
I think one problem is these are not (men).
They're "immature boys" with raging hormones. I find it hard to believe they are the ones "complaining" about how the girls dress. My guess is it's really the boys' parents or teachers!

No! Young men should be mature & disciplined enough not to be so-called "distracted" when young women dress attractively. This is a dangerous premise to suggest that young women are the blame for leading young men astray. It reeks of atavistic premise that women should dress in a subdued manner in order not to tempt or lead men astray.
Young men need to be disciplined & not to react whenever attractively dressed young women appear within their vicinity. Women should never to dress in order to placate the male ego &/or deter male attraction. Young men are going to be attracted or distracted by young women no matter how the latter dresses. Young women can be wearing a dress to their ankles & some young men will be distracted. It is not the type of female attire but how much discipline & self-control the young man has.
This premise furthermore is an undercurrent of the rape culture. When a woman is raped, she asked for it by "dressing" or "acting provocatively". Many times when women are raped & goes to trial, she is the one blamed for the rape while the rapist have an much easier time. Let's not blame young women for expressing their femininity, young men MUST LEARN SELF-CONTROL.
Uh, no girl should apologize for simply having shoulders. Or legs. Or even breasts - they're just body parts and have no place being sexualized in a school setting. Or any setting really. They're just bodies.
If boys are too "distracted" by the fact that girls have curves and skin and actual bodies, maybe the problem lies with society in treating women's bodies like they exist for the male gaze.
The girls wear clothes that are too revealing or tight, but the should not be blamed unless they are trying to be distractive. The boys should have their head straight and keep focused, now being a man I remember how my hormones raced when seeing a girl in tight jeans. The boys and girls should be talked to separately and if it persists then further action is needed.
