Not to be picky or anything, but a better question might be why is this one filed under "transportation" in the Politics and Social Issues section?

I don't know Teresa. Maybe implying that life is not a free ride?

    "life is free"!
I think most of us take years to realize it that "it is not". So lack of awareness could be the reason.

I am in transitional phase of exploring the same question,

However everyday life is demanding enough to prevent me from finding this truth.

I think that is why saints exists as they examplify that life is not free and use it to get the ultimate rest

Good observation Mrs. McGurk. I would have never noticed that.
On the topic of "life being free" I would have to say that it is not. There are "natural" rules in life even without our understanding of what life means. In terms of human understanding I think life becomes even less freer. We attach all sorts of notions and meanings to life making it far from free in my opinion ... I can always be wrong though.
