My political science professors said that the American two-party system in which both parties are fairly similar, middle-of-the road parties is one of the reasons for the country's economic progress and stability. They contrasted the U.S. two party system with the fragmented multi-party system of Italy and other countries at that time and the conservative vs. labor party system in the UK both of which offered less certainty and stability. In the UK the government tended to zig-zag between the Labor Party's socialism and nationalization of heavy industry and the hands off, liberal position of the Conservative Party. Currently the Labor and Conservative parties in Great Britain are closer together in their programs.
