George W. Bush happened to the United States of America - he did a lot for your reputation I'm afraid.

Many years ago, the United States subscribed to the principle, "Walk Softly But Carry A Big Stick".  In recent years, there are those in high places who have decided that our approach should be to "Walk Softly And Throw Down The Stick."  The romance with world peace, etc. gained much of its momentum in the 60's growing up with the love generation who felt that all anyone really needed was a hug.  Those people are adults now and many of them still believe that principle.  The truth of the matter is the world is a very dangerous place. There are a lot of really bad people out there who have only one desire and that is to see the United States and the people who populate it topple.  Look back through time and you will always find them.  One replaces another, situations change but ultimately there are always those out there who do not have our best interests in mind.  At the same time, I firmly believe there are those among us who will trade all that we have rooted in our democracy in order to gained a position of power for themselves in a globalizing of the world.  Impossible you might think.  Not really, the right levers just have to be pulled enough times. At present, there appears to be a very good opportunity to advance that goal on the basis of an international financial crisis which the USA will end up carrying much of the burden. Not only are we expected to bail ourselves out but also the world.  There are limits to what even this great nation can stand and there are some really cold blooded folks out there who will work in this direction under the guise of financial crisis, global warming, world hunger, etc. etc. Those who see these subjects as just that see no real harm in it. That is unfortunately the ignorance of a great society being led to the slaughter.  WB
