Do Law Enforcement Officers Need Additional Training?

In the days surrounding Christmas 2010, there were two officer involved shootings of family pets (dogs) in the Atlanta area. Should law enforcement officers seek additional training to avoid using lethal force against a pet trying to protect it's family?

Officers in Tennessee go through 40 hours of inservice training a year. Also there is a leash law in the state that says one must keep their dogs in a fenced in yard or on a leash at all times. Its hard enough having to worry about the people you are there on the call for, the perp who you are after and the other surroundings to have to worry about if your going to get dog bit or not. Unfortunately its always a problem unless there is a less lethal way issued by the department. I have known some guys to use pepper spray to detour a dog that was coming at them.
