FBI Director Christpher Wray addressed the skyrocketing rate of murders against police officers Sunday, saying the surge is far outpacing general violent crime.
Wray made the comments during a "60 Minutes" interview on Sunday, saying murders of police officers rose 59% in 2021. The total murder rate rose 29% last year, and the U.S. lost 73 police officers to such attacks in 2021.
"Violence against law enforcement in this country is one of the biggest phenomena that I think doesn't get enough attention," Wray said, adding that officers are being murdered at a rate of nearly "one every five days."
"Some of it is tied to the violent crime problem as a whole. But one of the phenomena that we saw in the last year is that an alarming percentage of the 73 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty last year were killed through things like being ambushed or shot while out on patrol. ... Wearing the badge shouldn't make you a target," he continued.
The National Fraternal Order of Police announced earlier in April that shootings of police officers had spiked 43% so far in 2022. The police union said 101 police officers had been shot in 2022 alone as of April 1.
"We are in the midst of a real crisis. The violence directed at law enforcement officers is unlike anything I’ve seen in my 36 years of law enforcement," National FOP President Patrick Yoes said in a statement at the time. "Last year was one of the most dangerous years for law enforcement, with more officers shot in the line of duty since the National Fraternal Order of Police began recording this data."
Wray also addressed a more general surge in violent crime, which has impacted most cities across the country.
"We're seeing more and more juveniles committing violent crime, and that's certainly an issue. We're seeing a certain amount of gun trafficking, interstate gun trafficking. That's part of it. And we're seeing an alarming frequency of some of the worst of the worst getting back out on the streets," Wray said."

When we demonize our peacekeepers, what else can we expect?
But I'm a little confused on how such an egregious attack on the most visible and common element of our governmental justice system is not an "insurrection". Are those attacks not being carried out on the authoritative arm of government? Was that not one of the reasons given that the DC riot was a "coup" or "insurrection"? Is someone (or many someone's, as in that riot) not attacking our country, meaning a coup is in progress?
You got that right... Good point. It certainly appears that we have a segment of our society that feel they can rebel against law enforcement. The numbers are shocking This year 2022 we are already o track to surpass the 2021 number of officers killed.
What are examples of insurrection? The stats say it all.
The definition of an insurrection is a rise against government authority or a revolt.
Interesting information on this year's crime against officers.

The National Fraternal Order of Police reports that as of midnight on 31 December, there were 346 officers shot in the line of duty in 2021. Of those officers shot, 63 of them were killed by gunfire. There were 103 ambush-style attacks on law enforcement officers in 2021 (+115% from 2020 YTD). These ambush-style attacks have resulted […]
So, it well appears by the end of 2022 we will have most possibly broken another historic record in America.
And I don't think calling these increased attacks on police officers a form of insurrection.
A tragic statistic - and behind every statistic there is a family. My one thought is that guns are too readily available.
Flip and Flop Novembers coming to get out a big old mop.
April 13, 2022 - "President Joe Biden is proclaiming that it’s time to “fund the police” and pouring more money into law enforcement in his budget plan. Democratic mayors in deep-blue cities are promising to hire hundreds more cops. Even in liberal bastions like Los Angeles, candidates are sprinting to claim the tough-on-crime mantle."
Biden on his own without a script -- It appears he is not for defining the police and gives an honest opinion. "In the beginning of the interview, Biden made it clear that he doesn’t support defunding the police, but he is in favor of police reform. Noah asked, “What does that actually mean?” “Because some people think that you cannot reform an institution that is fundamentally rotten in the core,” he added.
Biden on why he doesn’t believe police should be defunded:
“Well, I don’t think it’s rotten in the core. And I don’t think all cops are bad cops, but I think… Look, 90 percent of all the funding for the police comes from local taxpayers. So, the federal government under our system cannot, other than taking a civil rights action, say they do A, B, C, and D. But what we can do is we can make sure we insist [that] certain fundamental changes take place now, including making sure there’s sensitivity training, making sure that all of cops’ past transgressions are all made public. Because we can say, if you don’t, we’re not gonna provide the federal funding that we provide for you through what we call Byrne grants and cop grants.”
If 2020 was the year progressives reordered the traditional politics of crime and policing, 2022 looks like the year centrists are regaining their footing and nullifying those gains.
Two years ago, the police murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis sparked calls from progressive activists to strip funding from cops, eliminate cash bail and make other sweeping changes to criminal justice policy. Black Lives Matter protesters succeeded in pushing the conversation leftward, leading cities to flatten or even reduce resources for police.
That was then. Now, the FBI shining light on an uptick in homicides across the country is upending those advances, representing a setback for the left in the ongoing war between the Democratic Party’s centrist and progressive wings.
Maurice Mitchell, a leader in the Movement for Black Lives coalition and national director of the left-wing group Working Families Party. “Historically, whenever there’s been large social movements, at some point after that you experience some form of backlash. And we’re in the midst of that.”
The signs of the Democratic Party’s evolution on crime are everywhere — and go beyond defeats suffered by the “defund the police” movement in Minneapolis and elsewhere last year. As the midterm elections pick up, Democrats are calling for more police funding and attempting to co-opt traditionally Republican talking points on crime.
In Philadelphia, where Floyd’s murder prompted the city council two years ago to reject Democratic Mayor Jim Kenney’s request for a $19 million increase in police spending, top lawmakers this year are asking for millions more for cops. That’s on top of the $24 million boost to the police budget that Kenney has already proposed.
In New York City, Eric Adams, the former NYPD captain and pro-police Democratic mayor, is clearing out homeless camps, drawing comparisons to the city’s former Republican mayor, Rudy Giuliani. Democrats in New York state have also recently agreed to a deal to roll back bail reform after passing it just a few years ago, at which time it was hailed as a national success story combating mass incarceration.
In Nevada, Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, a former state attorney general and top target of Republicans seeking to flip the Senate, is reminding voters she has “worked closely with law enforcement” and is “supporting our police.”
Washington, D.C., where the city council cut the police budget in 2020 over Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser’s objections, is the scene of one of the most glaring reversals: Bowser is proposing hiring hundreds more cops, and now most councilmembers said they are likely on board.
Philadelphia City Councilmember Cherelle Parker, a Democrat and potential 2023 mayoral candidate, said her constituents are calling for more police resources amid an uptick in murders. She recently wrote an op-ed in the Philadelphia Inquirer advocating for 300 more community police officers.
“There is a demand, if you’re listening to the people,” she said. “They want us to fix this seemingly intractable problem, and they want to do it with a sense of urgency.”
She added that many people in the city are forced to make a “determination about whether or not they will allow their children or grandchildren to walk to the corner store.”
Even left-wing Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner — a leading figure in the criminal justice reform movement — attended a news conference held by Parker about her plan, though his spokesperson said he “has consistently called for a modern and effective approach to policing that uses more targeted resources for law enforcement,” and “[a]ll funding for public offices must come with accountability.”
