    Should Scotland be independent?

I am an American and like many of my countrymen I am not yet familiar with the workings of European governments, at least not familiar enough to have a valid argument.  I do however know that no nation is truly independent in our global world.  I think what would benefit Scotland is what would most benefit her people while still maintaining the individual rights and freedoms of the people.

I looked up Randslam's Zeitgeist movement after posting and I have to say socialism has never appealed to me and socialism ruled by an artificial intelligence sounds pretty scary.  I will investigate this further though as the concept is interesting to say the least.

    Hi MegR,

I think there are pros' and cons for both and I think Scotland should only vote for independance for the right reasons. For example, some loonies may use the vote as an anti-English vote or something stupid like that.

If independance would be best for the Scottish people then I would vote for it. Personally at the moment, I would certainly like to see more devolved powers for the Scottish Parliament. I think Scotland is more than capable of being an independant nation as she was centuries ago, but I'm not sure we have a leader yet, who I feel could take Scotland through the big change back. Hopefully a he or a she might emerge in the next few years that could carry this awesome task through and if I felt confident in them, then I would vote for independance.

I am a Scot living in Scotland and while I can sympathise with people wanting to separate themselves from the current UK government, I do feel independence would be a move backwards for Scotland and Britain. As Seeker7 says, Scottish nationalism is often used to promote thinly veiled anti-Englishness. I personally feel both Scottish and British and I'd prefer to keep it that way, if we can just get rid of the Tories...
