Is something wrong with American politics, and if so, what, and how would you correct it?

Pres. Obama said last week, “There is nothing wrong with our country right now, [but] there is something wrong with our politics” (NY Times, Aug. 18, p. A11), referring to the current deep conflict in our national political culture. Given that few conscientious people will abandon their deeply held political beliefs, how might such a problem, if it exists, be corrected?

Yes, the two ideological camps are polarized in a way where opposing one another is more important than coming together to accomplish the people's business. I don't think that there has been this much contentiousness in politics since the Civil War.The answer is what it has always been COMPROMISE between the parties.

Election cycles need to be shortened (4-year office should have a 2-month election cycle), there must be a full public accounting of money spent and money received for elections, and there should be a full accounting of Congressmen who voted on all tax-spending bills in relation to where they live and which companies benefited.

I agree with Emprasario but also i would like to point out that someone born with a silver spoon in their mouth cannot be trusted to run a country full of people who are nothing like him! The rich want to be in control because that is what they do. They control others and take the first slice of pie for themselves.
They have created their own caste and are feeding off of the system they are supposed to be protecting. They are representing a tiny portion of the population when it is the majority that elects them! Hypocrisy using capitalism as an excuse and presuming that because someone is not rich they don't know what is going on!?! Revolution! Say it with me kids, R-e-v-o-l-u-t-i-o-n!

    Believe neither party.
    Suggestions:
*hang banksters and their corporate lobbyists
*break the power of corporations, especially their power over media
*break the two party system by electing or appointing a brand new slate - and limit politicians to one term (at all levels).  Check out Athenian Democracy - very interesting ideas.  (Wikipedia)

First step anyone can do - cancel all subscriptions, turn off the tube.  Starve the system - bring it to it's knees.
