"Mug" is a street-slang term that I am guessing probably arose from the arrival of the Irish in the northeastern USA. Mug was a reference to face or look of person..."you sure got an ugly mug, pal" is a good example. So, the police more or less picked up the term from the streets and it stuck. WB
