Pertaining to the Canada/Gulf pipeline, why not stop in Montana with a refinery to desperse there?
The short answer is the refineries in Montana are not large enough to handle nearly 1 million barrels of crude oil per day. Only the refineries in Texas and Louisiana could manage that amount.
The oil needs to get to a port to be available on the world market. Refining it all domestically might be good for the US but would be far less profitable. The profit incentive is what makes the pipeline possible unless the government nationalized the project which doesn't make sense when capitalists are willing to contribute their own wealth. This benefits our economy and the American people by easing the energy crunch and unemployment.
