Why do people wear black during mourning?

For years, people have worn black when the have gone into mourning. Many cultures required the person to stay in black for a year. Many chose to wear black the rest of their lives.

I think we wear black to express sorrow and sadness. We can't very well were red or pink for instance, can we! Black is supposed to show solemness and perhaps gravity.

But why not wear red, and celebrate the life rather than mourning it. I hope everyone wears bright colors at my funeral. Bright and cheery....just like me.

I have to say that from my experience, wearing black at funerals is slowly being erodedand not much thought is given to actually wearing black.  A recent funeral I attended, we were asked to wear the brightest colors at the request of the deceased - it was the most colorful funeral I attended.
