I guess I got in here kind of late, didn't I? Is it too late to get on the ballot? I'm the dark horse candidate - just call me "Sea Biscuit".
I know exactly what things I would do if I were president. I will list them as bullets.
1. I would first of all immediately rescind the Patriot Act and the Military Commissions Act and restore all rights to habeas corpus, legal counsel, and the right to a fair trial. Also the right to freedom from torture, and extraordinary renditions would be ended. America has no business with any of that business.
2. Warrantless wiretapping of US citizens would be ended. Any suspicious individuals could be monitored via expedited warrants through the judicial system if required, to ensure security against terrorism acts.
3. There would be an immediate moratorium on genetically modified crops and foods. All field trials would be immediately destroyed to halt further contamination of our national food supply.
A large commission of hundreds of the best scientists, geneticists, agricultural, and environmental experts would be formed to do extensive studies on the effects of transgenetics on human and animal health, and their effects on the environment and the food supply.
All food products containing transgenetically engineered ingredients would be destroyed until further studies were completed. No one with a staked interest in the manufacture or sales of pesticides or GMO food plants, seeds, additives, or ingredients would be allowed on the investigatory commission, for obvious reasons of conflict of interest.
4. All vaccines would be suspended until further studies on the effects of all their ingredients, and only be reinstated if it could be proved that they are effective and do not cause auto-immune disease and/or autism.
5. The Federal Reserve would be ended. Categorically. (For this, I would have to go hide in a deep underground military base for a while so I would not get assassinated.) The US will henceforth return to a gold or silver standard and will go back to printing its own money.
6. New laws would be written concerning monopolies of the following industries: (Limiting how much of the respective markets they would be allowed to control, to insure fair competition of others)
Banks - Savings, Loan, Mortgage, Investment, and all other financial institutions. (Also, no more inflated credit, Ponzi schemes, etc.) Banking would return to its previous locally-based level.
Pharmacy, Medical Device Mfrs., and Insurance corporations:
Profit percentages for pharmacy corporations and medical & assistive device manufacturers will be limited. Pharmacy corporations will no longer be permitted to perform testing of new products by themselves. These will be tested by the FDA with the oversight of a special citizen-professional commission appointed for this purpose; this committee retains final approval of all pharmaceuticals and food ingredients, additives, etc, with another committee likewise appointed for the oversight of safe animal products)
No more health insurance companies. PERIOD!!!!!
Health care corporations - National guidelines will be set re: the quality of health care, and also limits and guidelines for the amount of money allowed to be charged for each service.
There will be a revision of health care staffing, to provide better health care and solve understaffing. There will also be a national drive to encourage families to care for their elderly or disabled in their homes. Also, the community-based living support services for the mentally ill will be re-instated forthwith.
Telecommunications companies - cable, phone, cell, internet
Department stores like Walmart - to be limited to one store per a certain sized area, to allow for fair competition of other stores.
Gas companies - for obvious reasons
Power and water companies - All electricity and water would be switched over to solar, wind, and hydroelectric. Starting immediately. This would be a national project. All could participate. Credits could be earned for working on this project towards education, money towards purchase of a modest home, or towards credits for converting to alternate energy source in your own home. Hundreds of thousands of jobs would be created - this would give unemployed Americans JOBS, and start the economy rolling again.
Also,I would write executive order mandating that water would be owned by the American public, and also that all energy and water would henceforth be FREE for ALL AMERICANS.
After installation of the new national energy system was completed, there would be a portion of tax monies kept aside for the purpose of maintaining the energy systems. NO MORE UTILITY BILLS, people! Everybody is going to have their own free energy and water supply. The big power companies and water utilities are history!
7. Organizing would be done on a community level to initiate community-based and local agricultural projects. This would involve the use of sustainable knowledge and technologies for the growing of healthy, organic and natural foods for the benefit of the communities where they are located. All members of the community could participate, and this could also be a fountain of additional jobs for Americans, at a community level, where it would do the most good.
8. I would order studies done - also at a community level - to determine the condition of local infra-structures like roads, bridges, dams, to determine where work was needed. There would be federal funds allocated for the immediate work on these projects. Again, immediately creating more jobs at a local level.
9. I would immediately sign an executive order PROHIBITING categorically, the outsourcing of American factories and service jobs overseas. Any company so doing, would lose their right to be licensed to maintain a business in the United States, and woud be prevented from exporting any of those goods or services into the US from any country where the company's factory or services had been outsourced to.
10. I would appoint a citizen-based professional panel to oversee the FDA and all it's workings. This would be a large panel of professionals, chemists, scientists, etc, who would not be permitted to have any corporate ties to food manufacturing, pharmacy, or insurance corporations. They would study all foods, drugs, additives, and ingredients, to determine whether they are safe for the American people.
11. The war on drugs would be ended immediately.
12. The outsourcing of the operation of all the nation's jails and prisons to private prison corporations, would be immediately ENDED. ALL jails, prisons, correctional facilities, and juvenile and immigration detention centers would be run by the states where they are located, except for Federal prisons, which would stay as they are. I would also appoint a panel of experts who would study the feasibility and necessity of running Federal prisons at all, and why they would not be superceded by the states.
13. There would be parity in sentencing, no more death sentences. I would appoint another special commission to do a study on what is the best way to deal with and/or rehabilitate each kind of offender, whether violent, white collar crimes, rapes, murders, etc, and what should be the best punishment or rehabilitation programs, keeping the safety of the communities also in mind.
14. News media would report the news at their own discretion, based on interest demonstrated by their audiences. There would be no interference by the Federal Government.
15. Congressional and Senate Bills would be written and voted on - on a one by one basis. No more bills with multiple and unrelated items. All the bills would also be required to BE READ by legislators before voting. No more pork barrel in Bills in the House and the Senate.
16. No more lobbyists. No one allowed to hold a public office who has corporate interests in banking, pharmaceuticals, food manufacturing, car manufacture, or any other large corporation or vested interest. Bills would from henceforth be written by legislators themselves, and not by lobbyists and/or corporations.
17. Election campaigns limited to public funds.
18. No more bailouts! Period. Sink or swim.
19. A Department of Peace would instantly be created. Dennis Kucinich and his wife would be the Co-Directors. The Dept. of Peace would immediately get to work studying the conflicts in the Middle East and other areas of the world to determine how these wars could be conciliated and resolved, with the object of achieving lasting peace. No more troops would be sent anywhere, and immediate peace and conciliation talks would be arranged. No more war for oil, no more war for corporate contractors. As soon as humanly possible, all troops and equipment would be pulled out of the Middle East.
And yes, I would talk to the "terrorists". To determine how to stop the problems, and how to achieve peace in the world.
No more illegal wars against non-aggressive nations.
20. There would be no more sub-contracting of "private armies" or "security forces". Done. End of story.
21. No more money would be spent in the rest of the world until our own economy was stabilized and jump-started with the items mentioned above.
22. There would be incentives & subsidies for small businesses. As there would also be incentives for farmers.
23. All tax money collected from the people would be used only FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE PEOPLE. No more spending on "pork barrel" projects, nor for "nation-building".
24. The US would immediately sign the international declaration on the equality of the sexes, which has not been signed as of yet by the US.
25. There would be a program whereby the homeless and the hungry could work to earn rights to shelter and food, and have a job. (Please see above programs) NOT FREE! They will have jobs so they can get on their feet and provide for their families, in return they get temporay food and shelter.
25. RE the Social Security Administration. They would now have 30 days to determine disability eligibility.
26. Many useless and needless programs would be vetted and ended.
27. Emphasis on family, natural living, sustainability, respect and compassion for others, community values, "getting back to basics", and hard work would be the focus of my administration. Everyone would have a place in the US - a useful and appreciated role. Innovation, independence, sustainable living, and the cultivation of individual talents and crafts would be at the center.
28. All education would be free. Emphasis will be placed on skills and crafts that people can use to fulfill a needed purpose in their communities. Carpentry, Agriculture, Sustainable Housing Building, Alternative Energy Technicians, Computer Programmers and Technicians, Nursing and Medical, Teaching, and Sustainable Engineering, and etc, will be highlighted and encouraged.
29. All health care would be free. Emphasis on preventive care and integration of holistic and alternative medicines. (A special commission will be appointed to study the benefits of alternative medicines and treatments, and these forms of treatment will be encouraged, including the creation of educational programs and job titles to include these specialties within the health-care delivery system.)
30. #'s 28 & 30 above, would be paid for by all the money that would be saved by ending useless institutions and programs, by ending the wars and military spending, by ending the Federal Reserve, and by ending corporate monopolies, by ending pork barrel spending and lobbyists, and by prohibiting the outsourcing of American jobs and industry to other countries.
31. Existing services would be strengthened and improved to safeguard our borders.
32. The US Constitution would be vigorously adhered to, and a copy of it would hang in every courthouse and every school in the United States.
34. We would wean ourselves from oil within 5 years. No more. This would be done from the bottom up, starting from a community and individual level. The technology is already there, it must be implemented. It must be and can be done.
35. These are all tough measures, and big corps will not like it - they will become murderous. If they give any trouble whatsoever, they will be escorted to a room at Guantanamo Bay.
36. We will restore the pride of citizenship, of freedom, of individual rights, of peace, and compassion for others, and the self-sufficiency and value of each and every American.
37. No more animal testing. No more puppy mills. No more kill shelters. Free spay and neutering programs. No more horse slaughter.
38. Vegetarian diets encouraged.
39. No more factory farming. All animal foodstuffs will be grown organically on small farms, with strict regulations for hygiene and humane husbandry.
40. No more invasion of people's bodies by urine testing. No one should have to piss in a cup to get a job.
41. Police brutality will be severely punished.
42. There will be a commission appointed to look into the effects of violent tv shows and games on children and adults. There would be rules placed on public broadcasting limiting these violent displays, to protect the saneness and healthy functioning and developing minds of children and others.
43. A special commission appointed to look into the preservation and well-being of all wildlife.
44. The North American Union is cancelled.
45. NAFTA is cancelled.
46. Congressmen and Senators are now limited to 2 four-year terms.
47. There will be another commission appointed to study and implement the furtherance of the development of local manufacturing, independent crafts, skills, and marketing, and to foment the increase in the exportation of American products and services. (Chinese Imports? DONE. Over with.) From now on the motto of the United States is MAKE IT HERE - BUY IT HERE!
48. There will be other issues addressed after all this is done. For instance, there is the little matter of some criminals that need to be brought to justice from the Bush Administration - for war crimes, and for torture, for the use of depleted uranium, etc, etc. Also, there will be a national, open inquiry into the events of 9/11 and those responsible will be finally brought to justice.
49. The Department of Homeland Security will be shut down., along with the NSA and the CIA. Those functions will be taken over by the US Military, overseen directly by the President and the Congress of the United States, as specified in the US Constitution.
50. The tax system of the United States will still exist (Sorry, guys!) But it will be restructured to better reflect the new priorities and the new directions the US will be taking. As stated above, taxes will be utilized for the benefit of the American People, for infrastructure, and for social wellbeing. Private enterprise will be encouraged, corporatism will be curtailed, in order for the economy to repair itself, and for jobs to be created on a community and on an individual level.
There will be a lot about a lot of this that a lot of people won't like. But this is the only way America can repair its economy and its society.
There must be a new focus on individual and community productivity and sufficiency. And we must lead the rest of the world in human rights, compassion, sustainable living, peace-making, self-sufficiency, integrity, and the value of individuals.
