What is abnormal?
I'm studying psychology at the moment and this is a hot topic in the Abnormal Psychology module. I'm particularly interested to see the answers of people who are not involved in psychology, but all are more than welcome to answer.
To understand what abnormal is we would have to first define what normal is. I imagine that's a herculean task to undertake. I would start by defined normal as that which I am familiar with. Then we would have to proceed to start narrowing and qualifying that.
Textbook normal doesn't exist, that is to say that there is no absolute 'normal'. Cultural norms exist, and there are basic human needs which could constitute a 'normal short list', but, normal in the context that most people use the term is actually based on morality, and even that changes over different cultures. Generally, being a productive, law abiding member of the society is the framework for normalcy which isn't dependent on cultural influences, but, from one culture to the next, being a law abiding productive member of the society can have very different meanings.

Do you find being gay/lesbian a normal aspect of life? How about gay/lesbian marriage? Would you support your best friend if they turned gay/lesbian?
