Who was the most effective Democrat President to ever sit in the Oval Office?
Andrew Jackson is normally considered the first Democratic Party President. Many more have come after. Which of them most positively enhanced the lives of the people of the United States during their time in office? Which Democratic Party President left behind the most lasting legacy?
I'd say FDR both for his leadership during the depression and his leadership during the war.
Lyndon Johnson, hands down. He was the best at getting things done in Washington.
That isn't to say that what he got done was the right thing to have done. He was unquestionably effective on the job, though.
If effectiveness is the sole criterion, let's not forget James K. Polk. He said he'd be a one-term president. He set four goals for his administration and he met them all in one term, just like he said. As for having a lasting legacy on the country, I'd say that extending the border of the United States from Louisiana Territory to the Pacific Ocean wasn't too shabby an accomplishment.
He's in my hub Four Presidents Who Chose Not to Run for Reelection (and One Who Chose To). Check it out.
