Why the disgust, hatred, and general dislike for the LGBT community?

I've found in many a site, including this one, that there are some very strong views.  Though, here it seems to be a lot more...adult about it - no name calling etc. What I'm wondering is WHY? Why do you feel that way? Is it fear? Is it jealousy? Is it lack of knowledge? Blatant ignorance? Religion? Pure hatred? A bad experience?  We all have reasons for feeling the way we do about things - so why do you feel so badly towards those who identify as LGBT? I promise to give thoughtful, and adult replies!

People fear and dislike those who are different from the general societal norm.   The general societal norm to be heterosexual, married with 2 or more children.   People who do not conform to this norm are ostracized and stigmatized in one form or other.    In essence, people do not like those who are different than they are.   They portend that everyone should be like them regarding lifestyle choice!

Gmwilliams - thank you for your answer.  I am of a very similar opinion - people fear what they do not understand. And, unfortunately that fear may prevent them from learning more, and understanding. Thanks for your answer.

i believe that jealousy is a big part of it. i'm not saying that the haters want to be gay, it's that they are jealous that someone has the strength to not be afraid of being what is considered different.

I like that way of thinking about it - it could be jealousy.  Thank you for your answer.

I agree with the other answers, of fearing what people don't understand etc. Also, religion is a convenient thing to take out of context to justify that hatred and bigotry.  If a passage in a holy book says it, it must be true and right.  After all, we still ostracize women during their menstrual cycle and stone our neighbors and have slaves ...oh wait.  We outgrew all that stuff.  hmmmm.  Maybe it's just going to take awhile for certain people to outgrow the immature life view that everyone should be the same.  wink

I think it is a lack of maturity spiritually that allows people to justify hating what they do not understand.  In some instances, not all, perhaps the people who hate those who are gay are self-loathing and have had some thoughts themselves that they deem "immoral" somehow.

I think we are slowly, but surely, making progress and that in the end reasonable minds and hearts will come to understand that it is not OK to hate a group of people due to sexual orientation.

Religion and society. It could be fear because if they are into that, what else are they into? They have never been accepted and I hope they never fully are. Can't they stay in community's like nudists? This way they still exist but are kept away from others. I am fine with people desiring to be different. However, something this drastic seems a little overboard.

I don't think they desire to be different, Iburmaster, I think they just are different.  But they are just as much human beings. I'm not sure what you mean by "what else are they into?"

Normally if someone has the fearlessness to go against what others believe, they also go past other boundaries as well. It is why Mary J exists as a gateway drug. If they are doing that, they might be on something else as well.

The same can be said for many things - shall we start ostracizing everyone who may have the potential to break a boundary?  Plenty of heterosexuals break boundaries all the time. Your philosophy here makes absolutely no sense. Trust no one? how sad.

Yet, the Bible, which is where most people get their...issue..from has JUST 6 admonishments to gay people, and over 300 for straight people. How  many straight people break all those rules? Most, if not all.

That's kind of it. I don't trust anyone. Everyone has something they hide.
