Should the government end welfare?
Should we end welfare and just create work-fare? That is make people earn their money via working for the governent by cleaning streets, parks, etc?
Ideally, yes there would not be any welfare programs. Although there are many other things, such as our gigantic military footprint around the world that should be cut first.
Also I would not consider work-fare programs to be any better. You still have government taking from the private sector in order to fund unnecessary government programs.
Yes, but with work-fare, they would at least be working. Maybe there is a giant military footprint around the world, but I am in favor of a strong military as I want strong locks on my doors. This is why no country has had a frontal assault on us.
WillWynn2,
Hmmm... I just can't agree with your view on what constitutes a strong military. Having military bases all over the world does not equal more safety at home. When you lock your door, I would assume it is your own, not a house across town
Good points, @Mr. Tindle. We don't need bases around the world and soldiers fighting Corporate wars of greed to protect America. In fact, those wars of meddling make things worse.
I see your point @Mr.Tindle, but how long after the house across the street is broken into before it will be yours? And lone77star, corporate greed? Good or bad, business is the backbone of the country.
Welfare serves a purpose and I generallly support the concept as long as there is some sort of work requirement for those that are able bodied and can work. There are many among us that for no fault of his or her own are handicap, etc. Do we just throw all of them into the street to face a Dickensian existence of begging for survival?/
Credence2: I agree with you on this. Yes, we should definitely help those less fortunate than ourselves. Thanks,
During the day, I see three people in wheelchairs begging for money. Within a mile, there are two sightless people working in the front office of two companies. What's the difference? Attitude!
End? No. Cut it back to those who truly qualify? Yes. But with this idea or the work-fare idea as your platform, good luck getting elected.
IDONO- good points, luckily I am not runnng for election! Thanks, for your comments, Kevin
This is a sure way to get people working. If they have to work for pennies, why wouldn't they want to work for more? The free market will take care of it. The more people we have working, the more people we'll have buying, and that buying supports other workers. Every dollar spent should have its counterpart in goods or services. And a fair price is what buyer and seller agree upon.
Yes, end welfare and let work-fare be the next step to work....period.
Government should stay out of the welfare business altogether, including such projects.
Let local and state governments take care of the projects.
And let individuals take care of the compassion to help.
Legislated "compassion" is anything but. It always results in less help and greater expense. Just look at what happened to health care when the government got involved. Higher prices and lower quality!
America has become socialistic and even communistic. Heck, we have our central bank and graduated income taxes. Karl Marx would be proud.

One of the favorite claims by the Right-wing is that once a citizen receives welfare, they are wedded to it for life. Now I know (hope) that is just so much hyperbole but the point they are making is that once welfare is given, it is a long-term affair. Can any of you who believe that PROVE...

Do you think General Welfare Programs will ruin our nation?Mainly, Giving welfare checks to individuals with no income. OR Free housing to those who are homeless.

When there was very little or no welfare programs in America, people learned to be self-sufficient. They believed that if they wanted better, they worked & sacrificed. In essence, they depended upon themselves. They didn't expect handouts from the government. Then in the...

Is government help like Welfare etc crippling to those who are on them?Obstacles create soldiers. We know that if we hit rock bottom there are programs that we can be on til we get up. What if these programs didn't exist? Would we work harder? Would we fail? Would the death toll go up? Would the...

I'm seeing lots of comments that seem to imply most recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), previously known as the food stamp process, are lazy, lack "responsibility" and are content to live off the government. As is often the case, available facts do not...

Understand these are "OUR IDEAS", no mention of political party. I'll start it off.1. Eliminate government cell phones! This is one of the most abused programs out there! Many have these phones and an Iphone as backup! Needs Policing!
