Can somebody sue you based on your comments on Facebook?

There are times when one vent on Facebook and post comments. Can somebody sue you for this even if you are telling the truth. Is this covered by the Right to voice your opinion or speech?

If you make libelous statements about a person that causes damage to his or her reputation, business, income potential or brings pain and suffering to him or his family you can be sued.

The Internet is not exempted from the libel and slander laws of this country. I am speaking as an old reporter to had to remember the libel laws when writing my commentaries.

You might get away talking about a public official or a celebrity, but there is no absolute certainty.

Finally, Hub Pages could possibly be held liable for your comments.

According to the law, anyone can sue you for whatever reason. Doesn't mean they will win, but still  they can sue.

The question is, are they willing to go to the trouble of paying a lawyer and going through with a lawsuit that they probably will not win? One can always find a reason to sue people. The difficult part is to prove that a statement is libelous and that the liberlous statement resulted in injury or loss of income to the person.

In a case a contingency fee lawyer would handle the case wiyh no upfront costs to the plaintiff.

Truth is a complete defense to defamation.
People in this country are very litigious.

We are free to make our own comments on face book and no one has the right to block us. If we make comments to create any sort of difficulties for a person’s business or similar things, that person can take legal action against us with those physical evidences.
