    Why is banishment no longer a common punishment?

    It doesn't seem too horrible of a punishment. Sometimes being banished is more of a gift.

      To where would you banish someone who has done something heinous enough to have earned it? There are no unregulated frontiers left, and no other jurisdiction would take a criminal.

      A prison at the bottom of the ocean. But then that would be a prison. Maybe the amazon rainforest.
