These days, is it real that mere money were a reason for respect?
Absolutely not. Respect in not given, respect is earned.
Money follows a successful person.A successful person must have a few good qualities and habits and he is consistent about his good character, good habits and good approach. It is the success and proven ability ( and not money) which establishes a man n the eyes of others thereby earning their respect.
So, you think a people who is kind, generous and caring but not successful does not deserve respect.
Absolutely Hui, such a person too deserves respect. My answer was more focused on the concept of relating respect with money.
I agree with old albion. To me, money doesn't measure the worth of a person or the respect a person deserves. I have more respect for a homeless person who is kind, caring, loving, and law-abiding than I am of a person with money who treats the people around them worse than dirt.
