Will a Third Party Candidate ever win the presidency, and when do you see that happening?
Maybe but I don't see it happening anytime soon. What is most likely to happen is that one of the two parties will grow out of touch and eventually will be replaced with a new party like the Federalists, the Wigs(US not UK) , American Party (A.K.A. The No-Nothings) and the Bull Moose Party (A.K.A. The Progressive Party). I think the third party concept will remain in the lower houses and state offices for now.
The only way that can happen is for the current two party system to change, and that hasn't happened, nor can it.
Another thought. If Bernie Sanders, and Donald Trump went third party this year, The democrats and the republican candidates would not have their voters tied to the leash. The diversion of voters voting for Bernie or Trump could be enough to win
Short of a scenario akin to when Jesse Ventura won a governorship because both mainstream party candidates were very low in support, so his 30% or so support won.
That on a national level is unlikely because 30-40% of the population votes straight line Democrat down the ticket.
