Should the WHO change its name to CHO?

We've touched on this issue in other threads, but it seemed appropriate to create a new one for the Deputy Prime Minister of Japan, Aso Taro's comments on the World Health Organization's relationship with China. He takes a jab in this clip, claiming that the World Health Organization should change its name to the Chinese Health Organization:

    Thoughts?

The WHO may be as bad and as at fault as is being proclaimed, but . . .

My thoughts on your link? Politics, with Taiwan in its usual sacrificial pawn position.

The first clue was when the link's broadcast started off with the description of the Japanese Deputy Minister as a "pro-Taiwanese politician." And finished with its focus on Taiwan's exclusion as a nation-member.

I would agree that there are politics at play, GA. Unfortunately, I don't think we'll see much discussion of the WHO without politics in the near future. As for using terms like pro-Taiwanese, at this point, it can be for clarification as much as politics though. Regardless of Taiwan's inclusion or exclusion from WHO, it's important to know which political leaders view Taiwan as a country and which view it as a renegade province of China.

Here are a few other articles on the topic (from alleged opposite sides of the U.S. political fence for good measure):

I think a quote from your first link sums it up: Damned if they do . . . damned if they don't."

An update on this continuing saga:

Trump cuts off U.S. funding to WHO, pending review

And the WHO responds that it would not be appropriate during a pandemic:

Trump simply trying to deflect blame for his slow response to the pandemic. Anyone with a realistic look at his words can see this for themselves.

I agree with you that his strategy is to deflect blame and I am inclined to side with the WHO that this isn't the time to cut funding. Although, I think the US does need to put pressure on the organization to keep it from taking questionable political stances. Future funding should be at stake with the WHO held accountable for detailed explanations of its recent positions. Regardless of what happens with the WHO, we shouldn't let Trump deflect blame. Robert Reich recently put out a good video on the topic:

Now he wants to defund the WHO. Brilliant when he ignored warnings from US Intel.

He's pursuing his goal of making "US intelligence" an international oxymoron (emphasis on the moron) hmm

The WHO issue is one little sideline of world politics with the USA retreating and China coming to the front.

After this Corona mess is over, China will be economically directly in the neck of the USA.
And - China is already calling the shots. Who is helping whom, not the USA? Where are supplies, masks, you name it coming from? World will not forget that USA acted totally selfishly, barely able to support themselves in this crisis. What was it about 3M production to be for USA only?

About recent step of Pres. T. to cut funding of the WHO: Who cares? Matters, budgets, projects will be restructured. But then without influence of the US.

Is this what the USA really want? Not to be important any more in the world? Can“t believe that. Leadership is not childplay and blame game. Just saying...
