More than 2 dozen states to restrict abortions after Roe v Wade overturned in Dobbs decision

Thirteen states in the country are poised to enact immediate abortion bans and at least 13 more could quickly follow suit after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade on Friday, leaving abortion rights up to the states to decide.

At least 13 states in the country have so-called "trigger laws" banning most abortions that will take effect immediately or within weeks of Roe v. Wade being overturned.

There are also five additional states – Alabama, Arizona, Michigan, West Virginia and Wisconsin – that still have an abortion ban on the books from before Roe v. Wade that will go into effect now that the 1973 landmark law is overturned.

Four additional states – Georgia, Iowa, Ohio and South Carolina – all have laws banning abortions after the six-week mark, which were previously ruled unconstitutional but will be revisited now that Roe is overturned.

In addition, Florida, Indiana, Montana and Nebraska appear likely, based on current legislative efforts, to move to ban or severely restrict abortions now that Roe is overturned.

    Praise be!

Exactly-however, smart thinking & enlightened women will be FIGHTING this.   I am pro-choice & view this as beyond horrendous.   Kavanaugh & Thomas have sexual skeletons in their closets.  They KNOW what THEY DID in their pasts so they want to punish women.  Alito is just an ..............

Yes, I'm sure women will fight this, and they must. Men too!
It's a war against women to cut their liberties and get them back as obedient uneducated housewives again.

HELL YES, women are GOING TO FIGHT this.  Exactly Peter, the Conservatives, Republicans, & Regressives want women to submissive, barefoot, & pregnant a la Michelle Duggar & other megamoms.

Yes, hopefully, this will be the downfall for the Republicans as 50% of the US population is women! And I can not believe that the majority of the women in the US are anti-abortion. (hope not!)
I hope this will have a huge backslash (as what will be next if people stay silent today, same sex marrige ban, rehab for lesbians and homosexuals?) Or will they ban women to vote if they had an abortion because they have committed a crime? Scary!

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas on Friday called for overturning the constitutional rights the court had affirmed for access to contraceptives and LGBTQ rights in an opinion concurring with the majority to decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

In his separate opinion, Thomas acknowledged that Friday’s decision does not directly affect any rights besides abortion. But he argued that the constitution’s Due Process Clause does not secure a right to an abortion or any other substantive rights, and he urged the court to apply that reasoning to other landmark cases.

“For that reason, in future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell. Because any substantive due process decision is demonstrably erroneous, we have a duty to correct the error established in those precedents,” Thomas wrote. “After overruling these demonstrably erroneous decisions, the question would remain whether other constitutional provisions guarantee the myriad rights that our substantive due process cases have generated.”

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) has vowed that his state will work to expand its abortion restrictions after the Supreme Court on Friday upended the landmark Roe v. Wade decision.

Abortion currently is legal in Florida up to 24 weeks of pregnancy, but a new law set to take effect next week will restrict abortions to up to 15 weeks, with no exceptions for rape or incest. The state has the third-highest rate of abortion in the country.

Pence calls for all states to ban abortion after Supreme Court ruling

“Having been given this second chance for life, we must not rest and must not relent until the sanctity of life is restored to the center of American law in every state in the land,” Pence said in a statement Friday shortly after the court ruled in a Mississippi case that states could restrict abortion.

We can now expect there to be a virtual "convoy" of women travelling to progressive states to pursue their reproductive rights.

Who is going to stop them?

Of course, women will travel to more progressive states.  This overturning is beyond horrendous.  It is a handmaiden's tale going into effect.  Make them barefoot & pregnant.  Keep them barefoot & pregnant.

But women that support Republicans have asked for it. I knew that this was coming in this matter in addition to every other that hinges upon it.

Republicans are now literally the dog that finally caught the car. This is a stick of dynamite for them.   Gallup recently polled that only 25% of Americans have confidence in Supreme Court and the majority of Americans disagree with overturning Roe .   Yes, Republicans have definitely asked for this. What will they do with it now that it's here?  I think that we all know that as soon as these state laws go into effect we are going to hear horrendous personal stories one after the other.   And look at what Justice Thomas is telling us comes next. This is a sickening sad day for America.

That's a good analogy. There won't be any middle ground. Either the 'caught' results will right the ship or they will rip the head right off of the body.

I am waiting for the "boom". Republicans don't care anything about polls, they already know they are unpopular and that the demographics bode against them. There needs to be a tsunami level attack by voters against the Republicans by all those disaffected by the SC ruling this fall, that will get their attention.

I WANT SC & OTHER RETROGRESSIVE STATES to vote against the Republicans.  Many progressives are angry at this SC ruling-they WILL VOTE THE REPUBLICANS OUT.     Thomas, I refuse to call him justice- is looking into same sex marriage & contraception.   It is eyeing should there be constitutional protections for same sex marriage & contraception.  Let me tell you- HELL IS GOING TO BREAK LOSE IN AMERICA.  HELL IS GOING TO BREAK LOSE.......

Let's hope that we keep stoking the flame and not allow Republicans to distract women from the significance that lie behind their ideology and policies, and that the repeal of Roe vs Wade is the culmination of all that. No rest for the wicked.....

There needs to be a single national focus to get them out. Issues regarding the economy come and go, but my Rights are sacrosanct.

The overturning of Roe vs Wade is horrific.  It is a VERY DARK day for women.   People who care about reproductive rights should protest this horrific insanity (which they are).  People are protesting this.   In New York City, people are protesting in full force.  FIGHT THE POWER, WE GOT TO FIGHT THE POWER THAT BE.

More important than protests is to make certain that Republicans pay the price in November, otherwise we are wasting our time as the Rightwingers could care less about protests unless they lead to outcomes that threatens their defeat politically.

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) on Sunday said she will ban telemedicine appointments with abortion care providers who prescribe pills online in the GOP-controlled state in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade.

Wow! Interesting as I never considered the idea of going outside the state to a provider for an abortion pill available through mail delievery. From the little I read inspired by this post I am not settled on if she is saying you absolutely cannot go outside the state for an abortion or just banning the pill via telemedicine. I don't like the idea what so ever of prohibiting someone via penalty of law of seeking a legal abortion in a state where it is legal. Pandora's box has now opened. I see battles ahead while feel liberty is being starkly threatened.

The Supreme Court’s Friday ruling overturning Roe v. Wade means an 1849 state law banning abortion in Wisconsin takes effect again. During a special session called by Democratic Gov. Tony Evers, the Republican-controlled state legislature declined on Wednesday to repeal the law—which Evers described as providing "no exceptions for abortion in the cases of rape or incest" in a June 8 statement.
