The GOP turned three Tennessee Democrats into celebrities, the unpopular antiabortion crackdown is still in full force as they've found a way to have a go at a national abortion ban with the Texas judge Matthew Kacsmaryk issuing a preliminary injunction that would effectively ban sales of Mifepristone . I thought they were all about states rights? The party is rallying around an indicted Donald Trump ( a losing proposition 2018-2022). Lindsey Graham cried on TV twice because of it and begged Sean Hannity’s viewers to go to “Donald J. Trump.com. to donate all they can. Gun violence continues with Republicans claiming there nothing we can do about it. The upside? The GOP has ignited Gen Z like no other.
Republicans have run into a ditch. Their base gets high off displays of authoritarianism and religious zealotry, so they’ve taken up an agenda that actively targets fellow Americans, inflicting real harm on communities with race-baiting tactics and onerous health restrictions. If your 12 year old becomes pregnant in Idaho, she will be giving birth as that state will charge anyone helping her to cross state lines for an abortion with a felony. The GOP marches on, completely out of step with mainstream America. They continue to alienate the voters they desperately need to win elections in purple states. How Republicans got here is no mystery.
The only question is, What politically disastrous decision will Republicans make next?
https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2023/04 … ves-losing
The GOP insists on putting salt on open wounds and they will have to lie in the bed that they so carelessly made.
"A handmaidens Tale" we may see being reinacted in reality soon. They start with minors which I have less problem with, but they will move to adult women that have every right to make their own choice without interference. That is when they will cross the line.
Instead of getting the message regarding moderation on the abortion issue, they double down on all the contentious issues, increasing the frustration with them.
With Coming demographic changes working to their disadvantage, they will cross the line from traditional democracy to authoritarianism leading to fascism itself. They cannot keep their agenda without conveniently removing so many voters that won't and can't go along. They will trip that wire and I will be there to catch them and call them out. In that way, larger numbers of people can see what this "party" actually represents and realize the danger before it is too late.
I'm surprised that no one on a political forum such as this is discussing the ramifications of the abortion pill ruling. I expected to see some here supporting it and providing all sorts of reasoning why the ruling is valid. Maybe they're realizing the Republicans are out of touch with Americans on the most polarizing issues.
“I expected to see some here supporting it and providing all sorts of reasoning why the ruling is valid.”
It is a losing issue for them, you will find most Republicans avoiding it like the plague. I say lets put the limelight on the issues and on them.
Today's GOP is reaping what they've sowed. Forty-plus years ago they created a political voting block based on a lie: life begins at conception making abortion a sin and every other form of birth control acceptable. Every Christian should judge every candidate in every election based on their opposition to abortion no matter how corrupt or unethical they might be otherwise. What the the founders of this movement actually wanted was to keep their tax exempt status at their private colleges without having to follow the new laws against segregation. They couldn't rally their churches around that, so they came up with Right to Life. And the republican base was created.
When you create a Christian-based political movement based on a lie, you will eventually reap the consequences. Never mind packing the Supreme Court though shameless disregard for the dictates of the Constitution. Never mind supporting for the country's highest office a man known throughout his life to be without a shred of character. Christian principles became irrelevant when lined up against the one issue that mattered: abortion.
The GOP has been so wrong about so much for so long, their greatest fear is that someone else might be right about something. Who knows what self-inflicted wound they might suffer next? One thing we do know. Republicans are a minority in this county and can not win without swing voters. At the rate they are going, they will only become more and more of a minority by their own determination to oppose what the majority of Americans want: reasonable gun control, access to health care, restored voting rights, dark money removed from elections, to name a few.
"they will only become more and more of a minority by their own determination to oppose what the majority of Americans want: reasonable gun control, access to health care, restored voting rights, dark money removed from elections, to name a few."
I think you are correct.
They seem to be doubling down on these losing issues.
DeSantis just signed into law a 6 week abortion ban even as polling shows that 67% of Floridians want abortion legal in most or all cases.
I wish he would declare his candidacy for 24 already. I'm ready to witness his political demise.
Speaking of DeSantis linked below if curious is an article by Reason a right-leaning online site an article titled; What 'Freedom' Means to Ron DeSantis
There are some jarring contradictions in the Florida governor's pitch to voters.
The article pulls from DeSantis book to compare/contrast what he said with a recent speech about freedom. Take a peek.
What 'Freedom' Means to Ron DeSantis

Thank you, this was an interesting read. Great insights into DeSantis. Certainly shines a light on his authoritarian tendencies. DeSantis appealing to Floridians with "give me power and I'll assure your freedoms...well my version of freedom"
There were definitely contrasts as I saw it. I like Reason's articles as I see them, though conservative-leaning, there is a less obvious bias and is more as its name suggests . . . reasoning.
Here is a link to the landing page with articles to pick through. I go there a few times a week looking for something interesting. A current one is Could the RESTRICT Act Criminalize the Use of VPNs?. How would that affect all of us and our personal security on the internet?

I am for a woman's choice to continue a pregnancy or not.
The premise that the sperm and the egg are not viable before conception is a rationalization. Life is in the egg and the sperm (as anyone who has gone through infertility treatments can confirm) and any interference prior to conception prevents a pregnancy from running its course as much as interference after conception.
That being said, can someone please explain to me the virtue of banning abortions after a certain length of the pregnancy? If you are going to allow abortions at all, what difference does it make how advanced the pregnancy is?

It appears that an interesting clash between DeSantis and Trump for the Republican nomination might be on the horizon. Two very different styles. What might be the outcome? Which candidate would you prefer?

I read this was true and I just have to know if it is, please! Please provide links to prove what you say. Surely we are not going to be aborting babies ready to come into the world fully developed and healthy?
