Trump Ignoring the Facts in His ‘Meet the Press’ Interview

In an interview that aired on Sunday’s Meet the Press, Trump gave his usual bluster and ignored some important facts...

    13,099 Murderers...

Trump claimed that the U.S. had “13,099 murderers released into our country over the last three years” who were undocumented immigrants. That claim is false.

Trump may have pulled that number from a letter the deputy director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) sent to Rep. Tony Gonzales that listed “the number of noncitizens on ICE’s docket convicted or charged with a crime.”

On the letter, ICE lists 13,099 non-citizens who had been convicted or charged with homicide who are living in the U.S. and who are on ICE’s “non-detained docket,” but those numbers are from not just the Biden administration but all administrations over the last 40 years, including Trump’s. Plus, not all of those people listed are walking free. The list includes those who are currently in jail or prison but who are not being held in immigration detention.

Welker confronted Trump with that fact, saying, “The 13,000 figure I think goes back about 40 years.”

“Nope. No it doesn’t,” Trump said. “It’s within the three-year period. It’s during the Biden term. No, that was a fiction that they put that out. This was done by the border patrol. It’s 13,099 and it’s during the Biden period of time. And these are murderers, many of whom murdered more than one person. You don’t want those people in this country.”

Blatantly lying or he just doesn't know the facts?

Trump went on to claim that prisons in Venezuela are “at the lowest point in terms of emptiness that they’ve ever been,” implying that those criminals are coming to the U.S.

But FactCheck.org writes, “Experts in and out of Venezuela told us there is no evidence to back up Trump’s claim. Reported crime is trending down in Venezuela, though not nearly as dramatically as Trump claims,  but crime experts in the country say there are numerous reasons for that and they have nothing to do with sending criminals to the U.S.”

    And he went on...

“I Am the One That Saved Obamacare”

Trump repeated a false claim that he said during the presidential debate, alleging that he “made it so that it (Obamacare) works” and said, “I am the one that saved Obamacare.”

But as president, Trump tried to repeal and roll back the Affordable Care Act through multiple channels, including executive action, lawsuits, and Congress.

On day one of his first administration, Trump signed an executive order that stated: “It is the policy of my Administration to seek the prompt repeal of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.” The order also told government agencies to “exercise all authority and discretion available to them to waive, defer, grant exemptions from, or delay the implementation” of parts of the ACA that constituted a burden. He also cut $90 million in funding for promotion of ACA enrollment and decreased funding by nearly half for people who helped others sign up for ACA coverage.

He then supported legislation,  the American Health Care Act,  that would repeal ACA subsidies. Trump even complained during the Meet the Press interview that  Sen. John McCain was part of the effort that stopped that bill from passing in the Senate. “So, when John McCain let us down by voting, and  Murkowski and Collins, and whoever it was that voted against, but they really let us down,” Trump told Welker.

The Trump administration also joined with 18 Republican state attorneys general to legally challenge the ACA, but the Supreme Court ruled they lacked standing to sue.

Trump has vowed to replace the ACA with his own healthcare legislation but stuck with his line that he only has “concepts of a plan” to do so.

“Yes. We have concepts of a plan that would be better,” Trump said on Meet the Press, adding, “Because Obamacare stinks. It’s lousy..."

    Still won’t concede 2020...

Welker asked Trump directly, “For the sake of unifying this country, will you concede the 2020 election and turn the page on that chapter?”

But Trump refused. “No. No, why would I do that?” he said.

Welker pushed back, asking, “Sir, Democrats have control of the White House now. They didn’t in 2020. If they are going around stealing elections, why didn’t they do it this time… So why didn’t they steal this election? Since they have more power now?”

“Because I think it was too big to rig,” Trump said. “It was too big to rig.”

But Trump didn’t think his victory would be “too big to rig” throughout the campaign, including when he falsely claimed less than a week before the election that “We caught them CHEATING BIG in Pennsylvania. Must announce and PROSECUTE, NOW!”

And yes...there remains no evidence of widespread fraud during either the 2020 or 2024 presidential elections.

    Birthright citizenship...

“We’re going to have to get it changed. We’ll maybe have to go back to the people,” Trump said in an interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker on that aired Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “But we have to end it.”. Lol vowing to to end the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of citizenship to American-born children.

“We’re going to end that, because it’s ridiculous,” Trump said. “We’re the only country that has it, you know.”

Wrong, sir. Just wrong.  More than 30 other countries recognize birthright citizenship.

Lying?  Or just woefully unaware of most facts?

    Tariffs...

Trump misconstrued the potential economic realities of tariffs, the taxes charged to importers on goods coming into the U.S. from abroad. They are a central part of his economic policy.

“I don’t believe” that tariffs are paid for by consumers, he told Welker when pressed on that fact. He also argued “they cost Americans nothing.”

But American consumers paid hundreds of dollars each year in higher costs as a result of the tariffs Trump enacted in his first administration, according to one analysis from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

According to most economists, corporations typically pass these import taxes on to consumers, leaving Americans to pick up the tab .

He  also falsely claimed that European nations “don’t take our cars, they don’t take our food product, they don’t take anything.”

Europe is the United States’ second-largest car export market and American goods exported to Europe totaled almost $415 billion in 2023.

    https://www.acea.auto/fact/fact-sheet-e … cle-trade/

Additionally...He exaggerated the United States’ trade deficits with Canada and Mexico as $100 billion and $300 billion, describing the figures as a subsidy. The trade deficit in goods and services was $41 billion with Canada and $162 billion with Mexico; a deficit simply means that one country’s consumers are buying more from the other nation, not giving money away.

He also falsely claimed that “crime is at an all-time high.” It is not..

In New York City, the homicide rate increased slightly in 2023 compared to the previous year, continuing a trend of gradual rises since 2021. While overall crime rates dropped in many areas of the city, homicides saw a 23% increase between 2022 and 2023

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) -- The NYPD released some statistics about safety in New York City during 2023.

The number of murders and shootings in the city both decreased last year and are continuing to track downward following the pandemic.

New York City had 386 homicides last year, according to new NYPD data, an 11.9% decrease from 2022.

"President-elect Donald Trump issued a warning on Sunday to Congress members who served on the House select committee who investigated the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot, saying they "should go to jail."

In his interview with NBC News' Meet the Press, the president-elect told host Kristen Welker that "[Representative Liz] Cheney...[Representative] Bennie Thompson, and everybody on that committee...should go to jail."

Welker then asked, "So you think Liz Cheney should go to jail? Everyone on the committee you think should be in jail?"

The president-elect responded, "I think everybody...Anybody who voted in favor."

Dear leader is on a revenge and retribution tour for sure... Biden needs to bring on the preemptive pardons.  Maybe he should take that new presidential immunity rulling out for a spin too.

Personally I think Biden should pardon the entire nation from any action Trump might take.  He should also make it illegal for Trump to do anything but eat and sleep while he is in the White House, locking the doors while Trump is inside for the next 4 years.

There!  Problem solved and Biden is a hero!  That he is outside the Constitution shouldn't matter; he's been outside it for years now.

Even better, run a poll on who thinks only published authors should be allowed to participate in these forums.

There are real... bigger than at anytime in our lifetimes... problems in our world today, many of the problems created in the last 4 years by some very powerful forces arrayed against America.

We are in a World War... no doubts now... could have been avoided, but not with the current people running the nation, they went looking for it.

We have China dominating global trade and Russia and Iran fighting America across the globe in various regions while China just gets stronger.

BRICS is developing well and now has more global support than America and the West... we are destroying ourselves with endless wars and open borders and senseless spending sprees by a corrupt Congress.

Things like this are occurring everywhere... within a few years America will be playing a distant second fiddle to China:

Trump doubled down on his promise to pardon Americans jailed for their role in the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021

We’re looking at it, right now,” Trump said. “Most likely, yeah.”

Trump said those arrested had no other choice than to plead guilty. He said the ones who assaulted police officers “had no choice.”

First day, I'm looking first day. These people have been there — how long is it? Three, four years," Trump said. "They’ve been in there for years. And they’re in a filthy, disgusting place that shouldn’t even be allowed to be open."

Sure does look like he's going to let these folks out.   And the J6 committee will take their spots in jail.

"For what they did, honestly, they should go to jail," Trump told Welker

I was just wondering if you're aware of some of the sentences handed down to those involved in the January 6th riot. Do you think the punishment should fit the crime? Your comment seems to cover a wide range of protesters, but I've looked into several cases where individuals committed little to no crime yet received relatively long prison sentences just for being there. I could write a book because hundreds of participants of the riot are sitting in prisons that committed crimes that would not have even been charged under most circumstances. I will add one example. No need to beat a dead horse.

Eric Munchel, also known as the "zip tie guy" he was photographed carrying plastic handcuffs (zip ties)and a and carrying a Taser.  during the January 6th riot, was sentenced to 2 years in prison. Munchel, who did not use the zip ties during the attack, was convicted of several charges related to his involvement in the Capitol breach, including obstruction of an official proceeding and unlawful entry.

Trump has emphasized that he would pardon individuals on a case-by-case basis, rather than offering a blanket pardon. There are certainly some who committed serious crimes and received sentences that were appropriate for their actions.

Trump said there “may be some exceptions” to his pardons “if somebody was radical, crazy,” and pointed to some debunked claims that anti-Trump elements and law enforcement operatives infiltrated the crowd.
Those, apparently, he won't pardon, lol.[i]

At least 1,572 defendants have been charged and more than 1,251 have been convicted or pleaded guilty in the attack. Of those, at least 645 defendants have been sentenced to incarceration ranging from a few days to 22 years in federal lockup. About 250 people are in custody, most of them serving sentences after having been convicted. A handful are being held in pretrial custody at the order of a federal judge.

Trump didn’t rule out pardoning people who had pleaded guilty, even when Welker asked him about those who had admitted assaulting police officers.

“Because they had no choice,” Trump said. "
SO, he will pardon those that assaulted police officers. Why am I not surprised?

                What a disgusting human being.

Do you think the punishment should fit the crime?

There are sentencing guidelines judges use in their decisions.  If these folks were sentenced within those guidelines, how is there a problem?

Yes, and in many cases they did not use respect sentencing guidelines. You are always there to defend the undefendable. Good for you... Maybe have a look at the over thousand sitting in prisons before you defend the judge's decisions.

Approximately 944 defendants have had their cases adjudicated and received sentences for their criminal activity on Jan. 6. Approximately 562 have been sentenced to periods of incarceration. Aug 6, 2024
Most committed no form of violence.

Early on, the majority of charges filed against the rioters were for disorderly conduct and unlawful entry.[12] Four years after the attack, about one-third of the defendants had been charged with assault on or interference with law enforcement officers.[13][14] Other charges include trespassing; disrupting Congress; theft or other property crimes; weapons offenses; making threats; and conspiracy, including seditious conspiracy.[15] Some criminal indictments are under seal. Some convicted rioters received a sentencing enhancement. On March 1, 2024, a federal appeals court said the sentencing enhancement could not be used, which may require the resentencing of over 100 rioters.[16]

I do not find any evidence of these folks being sentenced outside of guidelines.  The Washington Post did a review and found that a great number of them got a talking to and a finger wagging along with lighter sentences.

They also brought in millions of migrants and put many of them on the government tit...

Yeah... people voted for Trump... because of how betrayed they felt by the current Administration.

We all know Biden has lied, and the same goes for Harris. It seems like they all do at some point. What's your point, though? Do you believe Harris didn’t lie during her campaign? Both Harris and Biden have certainly been caught in some of their most significant lies on camera. Have you noticed that? It seems like many politicians aren’t always truthful when being interviewed.

You could post a thread about "why are my roses doing badly". By the second comment, it would be "Trump did it!"

I have been watching Trump's transition efforts with great interest. If you ignore the criminals and sexual predators he is nominating, he has done a very good job of putting together his executive branch.

But you simply cannot ignore the kinds of, by and large, anti-democratic demagogues much like himself. That is not to say he hasn't made a few good choices. But in the main, he chose people of questionable character, are climate deniers, are 2020 election deniers, and pro-global warming through increased use of fossil fuels.

All in all, it should be a disaster such putting a Russian sympathizer in charge of our intelligence or putting a sexual predator, platoon leader, Fox News host in charge of America's defense.

Even though one horrible choice pulled out, I hope the rest get through so that those Americans who added their vote to his cult members will understand the terrible mistake they made.

Trump has picked people to push through his tariff ideas. If implemented the way he says (although we all know what a liar he is), economists say it is almost impossible for inflation to return quickly. Given the massive scope of his tariff plan, a recession is also likely.

Trump has also picked people to carry out his mass deportation scheme which is intended to go far beyond just sending back criminals which Biden is already doing.  If he does what he says, economists say a recession is almost a certainty. Unlike most recessions, however, this recession is likely to be joined with inflation leading to the stagflation we saw in the 1970s.

People will quickly start seeing what we who voted for Harris already knew, what Trump promised is a mirage.

Finally, only 40 more days before Trump breaks his FIRST promise - ending the Ukraine War.

Trump keeps his promise to destroy the military by nominating a homophobic, myogenic, sexual predator as defense secretary.
