Trust in government. Does it exist anymore? The north star is fading.

Getting right to the point . . .

Americans Pass Judgment on Their Courts by Gallup (Dec 17, 2024)
Sharp decline in confidence in judiciary is among the largest Gallup has ever measured

    Others are . . .

    A Globally Significant Collapse

The decline in confidence in the U.S. judicial system not only means the U.S. ranks below other rich nations, it is also among the steepest declines Gallup has measured globally on this metric.

Confidence Drops Regardless of Leadership Views

A look at trends in judicial confidence by Americans’ approval of their country’s leadership (Gallup doesn’t measure party identification in its global surveys) provides insights into how the U.S. has reached its lowest point on record for faith in the courts.

Not All Institutions See Similar Drops in Confidence

    Skipping to the . . .

    Bottom Line

Confidence in the rule of law is foundational to a free society. But Americans’ faith in the embodiment of the rule of law -- the judicial system -- has fallen significantly in recent years.

Once Trump takes office in early 2025, attitudes could change yet again. But if confidence in the courts remains jaded -- perhaps for different reasons and irrespective of approval toward the country’s leadership under Trump -- it could undermine the public’s faith in the legitimacy of important legal cases and decisions.

What else . . . all three branches of government as well as state and local governance trust.

Trust in Government by Gallup (Most of the recent polling was March 15, 2024.)
    https://news.gallup.com/poll/5392/trust-government.aspx

The point of this is to mark a zero point for compare/contrast with the evolving change in government with change to Trump's new government. The Gallup poll information dates back to 1972 to see the evolving trend. The survey from observation appears to be conducted every September.

    Thoughts, criticisms, accolades, and/or commentary?

    Just for an aside . . .

Just my perspective, but I don’t think most Americans have a deep understanding of our judicial system and often form their opinions based on headlines and snippets. I see plenty of armchair critiques online about courts and cases. While there are, as always, a few bad apples, I believe our judicial system generally functions well and adheres to the letter of the law. Polls don’t always capture the nuances of legal issues, and in my view, the law—being one of the most complex aspects of our society—might be better left out of polling altogether.
