I believe it's because it was one of the commandments and is in the biblem which most people believe in.  Heck, ultimately our 1st laws happen to have come from GOD himself and fornication and adultery were listed as one of the big ones.  The thing is that we've decided, since Eve's sin, that doing our own thing is better. Unfortunately to our own detriment but nonetheless what we've done.

In human viewpoint is very different from the Bible. Some consider it not too bad but the Bible's viewpoint  yes it is sinful. That is under the fornication- fornication is any form of sexual relation outside marriage. 1 Cor 6: 9,10.  Heb 13:4
Sex relation is to be enjoyed by legally married couple

Sex is an expression of love reserved for marriage, according to the Bible.  To engage in it outside marriage is to be disobey God, devalue marriage, and disrespect yourself and your partner.  The worst part of it is spoiling your sexual appetite:  indulging in the dessert (the ultimate act of love) before you finish the appetizer (the commitment to enjoy the meal together).  That ought to be a sin!

Historically the church decreed certain behaviors as sins in order to stop what it considered a detrement to society. I suspect a lot of marriages took place in those days because of a couples' underlying desire to have sex. (No dessert before dinner.)
Some people believe having sex or living with someone will reduce their odds of getting married. According to Psychology Today statisically over 50% of the marriages that take place in the U.S. are between couples who have lived together. Simply put a marriage takes place when and if (both people) in the relationship want to get married.
Most dating relationships (don't lead to marriage) whether the couple has sex/live together or not. If they did we'd all be married to our high school sweethearts! Awhile back I wrote a hub on this topic.
