If a couple breaks off an engagement, should the woman keep the engagement ring?
I don't think so. The ring was contingent upon her following through with the agreement.
No guy wants to sink big bucks into a ring, just to have his fiance reject him, and then keep the ring as an expensive trophy. That's like adding insult to injury.
I mean, what's the point? Wasn't the ring a symbol of the love they had for each other and their intentions to marry one another? If she nixes the deal and puts those intentions asunder, she should graciously give the symbol of their love back to him. It's the right thing to do. And, it may also help him during the healing process, because if she keeps it, he may feel there is still a chance.
An engagement ring is a symbol that that person is intended to be married. A wedding ring is a symbol of their never ending love and commitment to eachother. No engagement? No marriage? No symbol.
The ring should most definitely go back to the person who gave it to her.
Personally I think that the ring should be returned to the man. The ring is given to the woman if she marries the man, but if they break it off there is no need for the woman to keep the ring in the first place.
On the other hand if I were the one to have given it to her I wouldn't want it back no matter how much it cost me. That's just me though!

From around the 15th century, the diamond ring has been the symbol of engagement between two lovers - as a precursor to marriage.
