In your own opinion, should gender be based on sex, or on what a person feels that they are?

Some people, even though born as a certain sex, believe that they are actually the opposite, despite what their body might be like. So do you think that people should have the right to claim their own gender, or should they just accept what they were given in nature.

I have a question. If I said I felt like I was actually a dolphin should I jump in the ocean? I'm sorry if this comes off as being negative in anyway, but how is the question much different? A person can claim any gender they want, but there is a reality in the situation.

I see, you made a valid point. Then what about if the person had a sex change? Does their gender really depend on their genitalia?

chunk999posted 10 years agoin reply to this

It's not a valid point. Becoming a dolphin would require changing species, which we all know we don't have the ability to do. Changing gender only requires changing the social norms n roles that you will follow and how you enact those roles to others

Seriously? how does being either a male or female have anything to do with changing species?

@humble. a person is still male or female no matter the surgery. @chunk&night. you guys really missed the point. me thinking im a dolphin has no more merit then my thinking im a diff gender because reality says different, and does not make it so.

chunk999posted 10 years agoin reply to this

@christiananrkist. It doesn't have more merit. The reality is gender can be changed, but it is dictated by closed minded individuals. I you feel like a dolphin and want to jump in the ocean, by all means do it. The dolphin inside you, not my concern.

@chunk. so you agree that me thinking im a dolphin doesnt make me one, just like me thinking im actually a woman doesnt make me one? I dont disagree with you that a person should be able to behave as any gender they want.

You're putting words in my mouth. You could never BE a dolphin, it's a different species. What exactly do you think makes a man and a woman? SOCIALIZATION. Can't be chromosomes cuz we'd have more than 2 categories: XX, XO, XY, XXY, XYY...

christiananrkistposted 10 years agoin reply to this

still missing the point with the dolphin thing. thats ok though. If socialization makes a man or a woman, are we nothing when we are born?

Gender is not something that is given by nature, rather it is an ascribed status that is given based on someones sex. Gender and sex, although related, are separate concepts. First, sex is determined by a variety of biological occurrences including chromosomes and hormones. Despite what we are used to in western societies, there are than just two sexes, there are intersexed individuals that have varying sexual attributes that are dependent upon their underlying biology. Gender, on the other hand, is not a biological occurrence but rather a social construct. Gender and the status, norms, and roles associated with a persons sex are not biological but determined by a society. Gender, therefore, is something that can be changed and manipulated, it can be enacted in its various forms to adapt to different environments. Although gender is ascribed at birth to match a persons sex, if later in life they determine that that gender is not suitable for their self image then not only do have the right, but they also have the ability to change their gender, Gender is not static, rather it is fluid; a continuum of different attributes and behaviors that vary by culture and society.

@caleb. if you look up the definition of gender, what chunk said makes sense to a degree. i think the question is more than just behaving masculine or feminine though.

Thanks chunk, but I can understand "things with an academic tone". I too have a college degree. However the fact is that a man is a man and a woman a woman. When people are taught this nonsense is when they become confused.

@Caleb There is just not enough room allowed to comment back at someone as ignorant as you are. An educated individual thinks in more shades than just black and white (male/female). The problem isn't trans folk, it's people like you.

Its all concepts in the mind. Whatever nature presents, that is the case. People can grab on to a different set of thoughts and beliefs but that does not change what nature has intended. They can have surgery but they are only fooling themselves. They are just going through the motions of their fantasy. They can't fool nature. Whatever a person was born as, that is what they are.

The gift of mankind, what makes us so intelligent is that we can manipulate nature. All this talk about nature, and it only matters when an ideology that has help together strict division of power is challenged.

It would depend on the person. many men feel as though they are supposed to be women and do everything they can to be one. the same is said about women who feel they should be men. in day to day life, an individual should be able to be who they want to be but at the same time, if a guy is at a gym, he should be using the men's facilities.
Thanks to science, we no longer have to accept how we were born and we shouldn't feel obligated to if our brains don't work with our birth gender.

There is a difference between between the words "gender" and "sex". Gender is just a social word while sex is a physiological word. Since gender is just a social word then it would be based on what a person does/acts in life.
Now on to the actual question. When it comes to anything "social" related it's none of my business what others want to do. After all it is their life not mine. If they want to be anything legal then it's none of my concern. It should be based on whatever they want. Now if we are talking public bathrooms or something like that they should be based on sex not gender. I don't want someone who claims to feel like a woman today to be coming in the ladies bathroom unless they've at least began to get lady parts!

What about intersexed individuals? People with ambiguous genitalia? Why does matter? It's not like we go around looking at people's junk when we use the restroom. At least I hope you don't.

It matters because I take my children in public bathrooms and what if straight men decide "oh today I'll act like a woman"  More bizarre things have happened.

The problem here chunk, and I think what peeples is getting at is, if we allow this it would be really easy for pedophiles or perverts to pretend to wanna change gender for the day to go into the womens bathrooms. People like this do exist.

My understanding is that the brains of gay men look remarkably similar to that of heterosexual women - which explains why they are attracted to men. This difference occurs before birth, when the child is still in the womb, according to scientists who have studied this phenomenon. Thus, one's sexuality has to do with one's brain, rather than if one has the body of a male or female. So, in all due respect, the premise of your question is somewhat flawed.
In fact, gay men who are openly gay, are indeed accepting of what they were given by nature. The instinct for sexual activity has to do with one's brain activity, not one's body. The genitalia merely carries out the act of sex. Long story short, due to the wiring of the gay man's (or lesbians) brains for same sex attraction, they naturally want to have sex with their own sex, just as the heterosexual feels sexual desire for the opposite sex. For gays and lesbians, this desire is natural. To act otherwise is unnatural. Additionally, studies have proven time and time again, that homosexual men cannot change into heterosexuals. Their brains do not permit it, having been created that way. For more information, I highly recommend the book, Torn, by Justin Lee.

Actually savvy, homosexuals CAN change into heterosexuals and become natural again. Examples exist of homosexuals who have had a change of heart and went on to lead normal, heterosexual lives.

Hi CalebSparks, A meta analysis of men who originally said they had changed, actually revealed they continued to have same sex attraction, but chose to have sex with a woman, out of obligation, etc., despite minimal attraction to women, at best.

Hi Humble Logic, That I couldn't t say. I haven't studied anything about transgendered people. I can only guess that their brains do not agree with their bodies. Chaz Bono is an example of someone who seems much happier now. Interesting question...

With transsexual individuals, they experience dysphoria between their sex and gender. Results in high suicide rates, depression, anxiety, low-self esteem, etc... Studies show that surgery, for most, alleviates these symptoms.

  8. lburmaster profile image73
    lburmasterposted 10 years ago

Are you sure that is what they feel they are? Can't we just accept that some men have a bigger female side and help them learn to accept that instead of getting surgery? Yes, you act like a female, but just because you don't fit the male gender social description does not mean you are a female. I think they should accept what they were given in nature and learn to love themselves.

    1. chunk999 profile image55
chunk999posted 10 years agoin reply to this

Surgery has proven to eliminate the dysphoria felt in transsexual individuals; studies have shown that post-op transsexuals have healthier and happier lives. If someone has a natural deformity should they not seek treatment? It was given by  nature.

    2. lburmaster profile image73
lburmasterposted 10 years agoin reply to this

Depends on the deformity. Plenty of people deal with big feet. Doctors sometimes cut tags of skin off newborns because parents often get upset when their children have tails. This is for the parents sake, not the childrens. We learn to cope.

I think people can be who they want. My only issue is if you decide to be a different gender and your kids are freaked out, mainly because you act like a two bit whore, then  yes there is a problem.

That is more based on who you are as a person then your gender.
I do know this from personal experience.

Can not even argue that statement. My point is when the children's (who are all boys) suddenly get thrown a curve ball like that. It is traumatic. Instead of getting used to the idea, or even being remotely classy. Traumatizing.

Spiritually and biologically it must be on the given nature or sexes that gender must based. but nowadays, people are given too much freedom in a way that they can now choose whether they wanted to be a girl or a boy. Gender is based on society while sex is based on nature itself.
