Some people, even though born as a certain sex, believe that they are actually the opposite, despite what their body might be like. So do you think that people should have the right to claim their own gender, or should they just accept what they were given in nature.

What about intersexed individuals? People with ambiguous genitalia? Why does matter? It's not like we go around looking at people's junk when we use the restroom. At least I hope you don't.
It matters because I take my children in public bathrooms and what if straight men decide "oh today I'll act like a woman" More bizarre things have happened.
The problem here chunk, and I think what peeples is getting at is, if we allow this it would be really easy for pedophiles or perverts to pretend to wanna change gender for the day to go into the womens bathrooms. People like this do exist.
Actually savvy, homosexuals CAN change into heterosexuals and become natural again. Examples exist of homosexuals who have had a change of heart and went on to lead normal, heterosexual lives.
Hi CalebSparks, A meta analysis of men who originally said they had changed, actually revealed they continued to have same sex attraction, but chose to have sex with a woman, out of obligation, etc., despite minimal attraction to women, at best.
But what about in reference to people who believe with their hearts that they are a certain gender, and not just in reference to their sexuality?
Hi Humble Logic, That I couldn't t say. I haven't studied anything about transgendered people. I can only guess that their brains do not agree with their bodies. Chaz Bono is an example of someone who seems much happier now. Interesting question...
With transsexual individuals, they experience dysphoria between their sex and gender. Results in high suicide rates, depression, anxiety, low-self esteem, etc... Studies show that surgery, for most, alleviates these symptoms.
The gift of mankind, what makes us so intelligent is that we can manipulate nature. All this talk about nature, and it only matters when an ideology that has help together strict division of power is challenged.
The sun is the sun. The moon is the moon. The male is a male. The female is a female. You can manipulate nature but you cannot deceive it. You will only deceive yourself.
Surgery has proven to eliminate the dysphoria felt in transsexual individuals; studies have shown that post-op transsexuals have healthier and happier lives. If someone has a natural deformity should they not seek treatment? It was given by nature.
Depends on the deformity. Plenty of people deal with big feet. Doctors sometimes cut tags of skin off newborns because parents often get upset when their children have tails. This is for the parents sake, not the childrens. We learn to cope.
Great psychological, insightful response!
didnt the question say some people actually believe they are a different sex?
Wow, chunk. That answer reminds me of political speeches; Lots of technical smart sounding language, but in the end just a load of c**p.
@caleb. if you look up the definition of gender, what chunk said makes sense to a degree. i think the question is more than just behaving masculine or feminine though.
I am sociologist with a concentration in gender, it's not a load crap, it is a well excepted social fact. @Caleb, I'm sorry you struggle reading things with an academic tone. If you are going to argue something, understand it first.
Thanks chunk, but I can understand "things with an academic tone". I too have a college degree. However the fact is that a man is a man and a woman a woman. When people are taught this nonsense is when they become confused.
@Caleb There is just not enough room allowed to comment back at someone as ignorant as you are. An educated individual thinks in more shades than just black and white (male/female). The problem isn't trans folk, it's people like you.
/As everyone is getting to learn Caleb is DEFINITELY in a CLASS all by himself. Caleb is BAR.........NONE........Haven't encountered anyone like him before........
I see, you made a valid point. Then what about if the person had a sex change? Does their gender really depend on their genitalia?
It's not a valid point. Becoming a dolphin would require changing species, which we all know we don't have the ability to do. Changing gender only requires changing the social norms n roles that you will follow and how you enact those roles to others
Seriously? how does being either a male or female have anything to do with changing species?
@humble. a person is still male or female no matter the surgery. @chunk&night. you guys really missed the point. me thinking im a dolphin has no more merit then my thinking im a diff gender because reality says different, and does not make it so.
@christiananrkist. It doesn't have more merit. The reality is gender can be changed, but it is dictated by closed minded individuals. I you feel like a dolphin and want to jump in the ocean, by all means do it. The dolphin inside you, not my concern.
@chunk. so you agree that me thinking im a dolphin doesnt make me one, just like me thinking im actually a woman doesnt make me one? I dont disagree with you that a person should be able to behave as any gender they want.
You're putting words in my mouth. You could never BE a dolphin, it's a different species. What exactly do you think makes a man and a woman? SOCIALIZATION. Can't be chromosomes cuz we'd have more than 2 categories: XX, XO, XY, XXY, XYY...
still missing the point with the dolphin thing. thats ok though. If socialization makes a man or a woman, are we nothing when we are born?
I know plenty of biological women that act like two bit whores. Now days it's almost a requirement for women.
Can not even argue that statement. My point is when the children's (who are all boys) suddenly get thrown a curve ball like that. It is traumatic. Instead of getting used to the idea, or even being remotely classy. Traumatizing.
I'm not sure i understand what you're getting at.
