What do you tell an acquaintance, friend, or relative on a card when their loved one passed away?
I tell them that my thoughts and prayers are with them, and that I give them my condolences. If they are religious you could reference their belief about seeing each other again in the next life.
You could say something along the lines of - Thinking of you at this difficult time.
Any of these...
"Just wanted to let you know I'm thinking about you."
"So sorry to hear that you lost your _________________"
"I know there's not much I can say, but if there's anything at all I can do to help in some way, let me know."
