Probably because the population is too intelligent to use them.

It's a cultural thing I suppose. Just as "arranged marriages" aren't likely to become a big thing in the United States. However I would not be too surprised if online dating catches on eventually in India. It may be 20 years from now.  Western pop culture has a way of filtering it's way throughout the globe whether it be McDonalds, Apple iPads and iPods, Coca Cola, ...etc

This question was asked 2 years ago but letme sum up what has changed since the last two years in dating industry in India.
Yes,it is right that online dating was considered a taboo in india and is still considered by some people.
here is an article in timeofindia that shows why girls in india has always hesitated in using dating app
    http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/life … 148804.cms

"With men skewing up the gender ratio at dating sites, these sites are looking at giving women the power to choose legit profiles. "Since there were a lot of weird guys online, we took that as feedback, allowed women to be the decision makers and ensure we have decent guys on the platform," says Josh, who has women users approving the guy's profile first.

For sites that don't have such a filter, women have to rely on their instincts. Sen has until now met one guy through one such dating site, which turned out to be a pleasant experience. She says, "You have to be very wise about it. You'll find weird men everywhere, but you need to have a proper filter in place." For Sen, her filter is grammar. "Men using slang like 'ma place' or 'ma friends' is a sign there is something wrong with the guy."

But the conditions are changing and there are many competitors not only in the dating websites but also in mobile applications.
here is an article that show some of the successful applications that has gained popularity and people across india are beginning to use them.

Among them is www.thrillapp.com which claims to over users over 50,000 in india and has rating more than 3.5/5 on playstore.
And finally here is an article that support my notion

Online dating is a less dicovered niche but is getting momentum day by day.
I hope this has cleared things a bit.
