Is the concept of having everlasting relationships, outmoded ?

No. I have yet to meet any couple who told me on their wedding day they believe they were going to get divorced. The "concept" of "until death do us part" is alive and well! No one (plans) to get divorced when they say "I do."
However the future is always "hypothetical" in nature. Everyone has "deal breakers". These may include verbal/physical abuse, alcohol/drug addiction, infidelity, abusing one's children, affection and sexual neglect. There is no virtue in becoming someone's doormat.
If someone is unhappy in their marriage and they (choose) to stay then (they) are choosing to be unhappy.
The reality is when it comes to relationships most of us (fail our way) to success! If this were not true the majority of us would be married to our high school sweethearts!
The biggest challenge is selecting the "right mate" for one's self. Ideally you want someone who shares your same values, wants the same things for the marriage that you do, (naturally agrees) with you on how to obtain those things and last but not least there is a (mutual) depth of love and desire for one another.
Staying together just for the sake of staying together is not a recipe for happiness. It's a design for building a prison. http://dashingscorpio.hubpages.com/hub/ … forgranted
