What are the benefits of being in a long distance relationship versus face-to-face?

I suspect there are more negatives than benefits. Most people "in love" would prefer to be able to see and touch their mate as often as possible. Too much absence can make the heart wander.
On the other hand if the relationship is casual or not all that "serious" then it makes it easier to date other people, spend time with friends and family, focus on other areas in your life such as school or career.
No one can force a confrontation with you because you can be as available or unavailable as you desire. All you need to do is shut off your phone or ignore the calls and emails. It's not like they could just show up at your door. However this also works the other way around.
If you are a person who wants to be emotionally connected to someone but at the same time treasure having your "personal space" a long distance relationship can be ideal. It eliminates all the small annoyances regarding household chores that often arise when couples live together. There is very little need to compromise.
Whenever they visit you or you visit them it's like being on a vacation. You tend to focus on the positives because you don't want to waste what little time you have together fighting about small  stuff.
