What is morality?
In a recent forum that set forth abolition of religion would have no effect on society, the word morality was tossed around until it made perfectly reasonable(my assumption) people sound accepting of anything..
Principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behavior.
Behavior as it is affected by the observation of these principles.
Morals are a set of boundaries, and guidelines for what type of action and behavior are acceptable in a society.
Before 2002, the North American Christian church considered the tenets proscribed within the Bible, to be a gauge of what a moral society considers holy and unholy, profane, and innocent.
Today, the church has been mined by politicians, and had their thinking skewed by mainstream media, so things like lying, adultery, child exploitation, bigotry, and hatred are acceptable within the North American church body today.
This is not meant to offend Christians, or the North American Church, I live where there is a church every 100 ft or so, and this is something alarming I experience each day, in dealing with those who consider themselves Churched.
Which morals?
This is one reason I found Dali' Lama's latest book "Beyond Religion: Ethics for a Whole World" is to me the ultimate explanation of morals and their use in today's society.
morality today means whatever someone doesn't like about their neighbors that they can pass personal judgments on and call it God's will. The religions love to call everything they don't approve immoral, and yet they (as self professed moralists) practice bigotry, hatred, intolerance, indifference and judgmentalism on a daily basis.
Morality means nothing to anyone except those who want to pass judgment on others and try to run other people's lives, you know, like the 'religious' zealots do.
I'm just saying.
d. williams Who are your "religious" zealots. I agree or disagree with you depending on who you put into your classification of religious.
zealotry: fanatical devotion without rhyme or reason. Illogical adherence to verbatim rhetoric in their so called holy books. Those who never learned to actually think for themselves. Shall i go on? You can find these in every religion/cultus.
Excellent definition, so glad you weren't aiming at anyone in particular.
Tireless, I see it as a code of conduct shaped by one's beliefs -- often religious beliefs. As others have noted here, it only has credibility when the beliefs and the conduct match up.
Each of us makes and defines our own perceptions of morality. I would think that our defined perceptions are from a combination of nuture and nature so to speak. I believe the basic principles of religion are to keep society safe as a whole and to a good degree civilized. The lack of any general guidelines for right and wrong would lead to complete chaos in society. My point here is that there are many who believe in nothing or any kind of life after death. They feel that nothing has relevance or matters and there really are no consequences if you are not caught. Hence, religion for some is the one thether that keeps them from possibly hurting innocent people. Yes, there is a lot of hypocracy and bad things done by some in the name of religion, but there is probably more good overall done in the name of religion.
Very good question for thought, tireless. Have a great 4th
morality is a code of values to guide man’s choices and actions—the choices and actions that determine the purpose and the course of his life.

Do you think religion compels morality, or does morality determine religion?Obviously the relationship is somewhat multi-directional for most people, but I'm wondering which you think is more powerful. Do people usually choose a religion that aligns with their preexisting morality? Or do they...

This word oftentimes create quite a visceral reaction. There are many proponents who maintain that in order to be a moral person, one must be religious. They strongly contend that there is NO morality without religion. They are of the consensus that religion and religious belief...

Why do religious people often insist that religion is what creates moral behavior? As an agnostic/atheist who works hard to do the right thing every day I find this insulting and ridiculous. After all, if prayer and religious beliefs equaled morals there would be no controversy with priests...

Why is it assumed that Morals are dictated by Religion? Doesn't that scare you?It is mentioned a lot that Morals are dictated by Religion, and the inference (or the direct statement occasionally) is that therefore Atheists are immoral. What makes people think this? I'm curious. Has anyone...

Do you believe religion is needed for morality? Is the bible the only guide to morality? If you believe these things, do you really think you would go around commiting crimes and immoral acts if the bible didn't tell you not to? I actually give (most) people more credit than that, don't you? If this...

I often see these hubs they have variation but the thrust is the same, if we get rid of religion society will collapse and morality will disappear, let's analyze that. Crime rates are higher in US states with highest rates of religiosity.Christians are actually more likely to be divorced than...
