How much do you know about Mormons?

Why is there such great persecution for a people who didn't hurt anyone?

You ask two separate questions, and I'll try to answer both.

I've looked at Mormonism from the outside, but been interested in the fruits of its thinking, especially in literature (Orson Scott Card) and business (Kody Bateman, of Send Out Cards, and the late Stephen R. Covey, who I've written several hubs about). I had a close friend who was a member of the original church created by Joseph Smith, who the Mormons also claim as an originator. And I've read about Mormonism in both esoteric and theological contexts.

As to "such great persecution," first, I would say that the persecution has been relatively mild, compared, for example, to the Nazi holocaust against Jews, Gypsies, Christians, and others.

But, to the extent that there has been persecution, one big issue is the Bible. Many branches of Christianity consider the Bible to be the defining text of their faith. That includes saying that any later book cannot be taken as holy, and especially cannot be seen as superseding the Bible. But Mormons believe that the Book of Mormon is a later, truer text that supersedes the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament.

On a theological level, Mormonism holds some ideas very close to Christian gnosticism and other historical belief systems that were declared heresy by the Catholic Church in centuries past.

So the Mormon relationship to the Bible and to core Christian beliefs brings things into question that certain Christians do not want to consider as being questionable.

I see what you are saying. We do believe in the Bible as long as it is translated correctly. We feel that the KJV is the closest to the true translation that is available today. As for the persecution, you're correct in the fact that it didn't compare in size to the Holocaust, but there was an extermination order given by the government to kill all Mormons on the spot. Also, we are constantly slandered on websites and the mainstream media. Having the FLDS that broke off our church makes us look bad also, I have been asked many times how many wives I have. People also inquire about my magic underwear. I am happily and legally married to the most beautiful woman in the world, one wife, and the "magic underwear" is just modest, white underwear that we wear under our clothes daily and to our temple as a sign of purity.

Thanks, PHTech, for sharing your experience of the prejudice you encounter as a Mormon. I follow most of what you are saying. One point is not clear to me: When was this extermination order given, and has it been rescinded? What if any action arose?

I realize that Wikipedia is not a great source, but this article will answer both of your questions. The order was given in 1838 and rescinded in 1976. Members were forced from their homes at gunpoint, and some killed including our prophet Joseph

Your Wikipedia link did not come through. Please provide article title, and try the link again. I did find this related item: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mormon_War_%281838%29

Oops,PHTech, that wasn't the right link. I'm looking for a Wikipedia link on the 1838 order regarding the Mormons.

It most definitely is. Are you sure you know anything about them? You know they read the KJV of the Bible too right? Why do people automatically assume what we believe?

I assume nothing.  I have checked your beliefs against the real scriptures and they are lacking.   you even brag you have ANOTHER gospel of jesus christ, whjch Paul warned us that you would do.  It is a damnable heresy, as is joseph smith, a heretic.

I won't fight with you. I won't slander your religion either. If you want to create contention then so be it. But I know my religion and what we believe in. I won't judge you and you have no right to judge me.

I am not judging you,   I just stated the facts about your religion, I judge it as not a ministry of the real Jesus Christ.    If the shoe fits , wear it.   But I do not know you, I know your religion that professes to be of God and is not of GOD..

I was a Mormon  believer and to tell you the truth I would not like to go back there. What I differ with this 'sect' is that they have an extra Bible which most of the time they use in the church though they make reference with it. I never indulged myself further into it but what I learned is that there is only one Bible and any other faith professing to believe in Jesus and they have an extra Bible or books in the Bible is not true. Revelation is clear that whoever adds or subtracts the books in the Bible, there is a consequences. I would not advice anybody to accept that faith.
