   What is The Purpose of Fasting in Holy Month of Ramadan
   
   Muslims Fast During this Month of Ramadan, one whole month, everyday from sunrise to sunset without food , water and many more restrictions. Why is so?

   Ramadan is a time of spiritual reflection, improvement and increased devotion and worship. Muslims are expected to put more effort into following the teachings of Islam. The fast (sawm) begins at dawn and ends at sunset. In addition to abstaining from eating and drinking, Muslims also increase restraint, such as abstaining from sexual relations and generally sinful speech and behavior. The act of fasting is said to redirect the heart away from worldly activities, its purpose being to cleanse the soul by freeing it from harmful impurities. Ramadan also teaches Muslims how to better practice self-discipline, self-control, sacrifice, and empathy for those who are less fortunate; thus encouraging actions of generosity and compulsory charity (zakat).

      @So that they can become more pious and GOD fearing. The fast is to feel hunger of those who are less privileged. They should help poor generously.

   While fasting from dawn until sunset, Muslims refrain from consuming food, drinking liquids, smoking, and engaging in sexual relations; in some interpretations they also refrain from swearing. Food and drink is served daily, before sunrise and after sunset. According to Islam, the thawab (rewards) of fasting are many, but in this month they are believed to be multiplied. Fasting for Muslims during Ramadan typically includes the increased offering of salat (prayers) and recitation of the Quran.

   Although reena´s answer is eloquent, I have found throughout the years that Christians are most interested in Ramadan because of the empathy we feel for the poor.Even when they donate time or money, most of them are not able to understand what it is really like to do without. (I am writing this at 5:17, so if I leave a lot out my brothers understand why.)

   All purposes remain as personal judgments and deductions of muslims, the most important purpose is that it is a matter ordained by our creator who said in the holy Qura;an in Surat Al-Baqara. :-
     2:184 (Fasting) for a fixed number of days; but if any of you is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed number (Should be made up) from days later. For those who can do it (With hardship), is a ransom, the feeding of one that is indigent. But he that will give more, of his own free will,- it is better for him. And it is better for you that ye fast, if ye only knew.
   
   Benefits come from obeying His orders even if the benefits are not disclosed to us, the fasting itself is a test for the genuineness of our faith which deserve His reward.This is the first purpose in my view.
