Do you feel most people who call themselves Christian are out of touch with the teachings of Jesus?
Regardless of whether you call yourself a Christian or not, many feel that current organized religion is out of touch with modern day life and that many of the attitudes held by members of Churches are in direct contradiction to what Jesus taught and the way He lived His life. What is your opinion?
Absolutely!
We as a society do not live according to the "Love thy neighbor as thyself" or "Judge not lest ye be judged" and "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone.." .
Simply following those teachings would put an end to a lot of war, discrimination, racism and sexism .
Sadly it is religious people who often tend to be the most "judgmental" and unaccepting of others
Ecclesiastes 7:20 says it best.
"For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not"
Having said that I'm not a fan of any organized religion.
I believe God made man and man made religion.
Nevertheless I believe there are things one can learn from various points of views as long as they can agree to disagree and not resort to attacks. Life is a (personal) journey. Live and let live.
People have more in common than not. Everyone wants to live in a safe neighborhood, be able to provide for their family, and do things they enjoy during vacation and leisure times.
Seems all to easy to support you here as on the surface you argue a strong case.
I have Faith in human beings - my brothers and sisters in Spirit - and as such I feel that we all have a sense of compassion, mercy, forgiveness, sacrifice ... all values which Christianity teaches.
This Divine Plan works with many - including Christians - having differing views. The fact that one may see things in a particular way does not necessarily mean that he is wrong and we are right. The baby is quite right to suck on his mother's breast, and the adult is quite right not wanting to do so.
What did Jesus teach? I may say that Spirituality is life in action, that St. Paul exhorts us to be imitators of Christ. Some believe that we should try to be perfect, yet others believe that this is impossible, that it is even not practical to wish to be like our Lord.
Ultimately, it is the inner Light that teaches, not man, and the Universe is as unfolding as it should. How can we do our work properly, if we spend every day looking at the 'skivers'?
So in so far as we are inately spiritual, and all want peace, love, happiness ... qualities expounded by Christian scriptures, then one cannot truly say that organised religion is out of touch. All things come from God, and nothing exists without cause or purpose.
Thank you for your input. Your comments are thought provoking. I too believe that people are generally good. I am not against organized churches but do oppose bias in any form. You are right in your statement that we all want basically the same thing
Bias is there, yes, and I knew intuitively what you meant and that you are essentially a good Soul, Kiw1157. There is a point, however, when having reached, one simply focuses on the Goal ahead.
I agree completely.
I know that I'm not yet following Christ and I've been working on it for 61 years. When he said that it was a narrow, difficult path, he's not kidding.
But many ministers and so-called Christians water down the teachings and act as if they "know it all."
None of us know the Truth of God and the Universe. So, we all have much more to learn.
Too many feel that miracles are a thing of the past, but I declare that the Age of Miracles never ended. If you are in spirit, you are a child of God with all His abilities.
Thank you for your thoughts. Following Christ can be anything but easy. I, like you, have been on a life long journey and by far have not reached a point where I feel even remotely close to successful. I do think however that struggle is the journey.
Yes, both you, Kiw1157 and Lone Star are on a Path I admire. Struggle, struggle, struggle ...
There are over 7 Billion people in the world. Some live like true Christians, not perfectly, but they do pretty well. Then there are others that say they're Christian, but don't act like it.
On thanksgiving we all say how much we're thankful for everything we have. The next day is Black Friday where we shop until our credit cards are maxed out because we aren't happy with the things that we have. People seem to do this with a lot of things.
Yes, most folks cannot culturally 'reset' themselves to come close to comprehending the radical realities of primitive Christianity. bandbseminars.com
How do they get "out of touch with the teachings of Jesus" doctrine when they were never "in touch with His teachings? Do we not live under the New Covenant? Does anyone know WHEN Jesus "Promised" it? Does anyone know WHAT He Promised? Do they know HOW He fulfilled that Promise? Does anyone know WHERE He fufilled the Promise? Does anyone care? Did Christ die in vain? How can anyone "call themselves Christian" if they don't know the message He left us for salvation? Satan is enjoying your "ignorance!"
There is an old saying, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks" and it seems appropriate when it comes to teaching "TRUTH" in Scripture when "governmental religion" (Catholicism) has been instilled in all for generations! The Scriptures say, AND NOW IS, in II Timothy 4:3-4 "For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine but, after their own lusts, shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears, (v4) And they shall turn away their ears from the TRUTH, and shall be turned into fables." This is precisely where the world is today and Satan is elated!
I cannot stress enough the importance of studying His Word! Again, Scripture tells us that we currently live under the New Covenant which Jesus Promised in Jeremiah 31:31-33; Hebrews 8:10 and 10:16 in which He said (WHAT) He would "put His laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts."! HOW did He accomplish this? John 14:26 and 16:13 said that He would send us a Comforter (The Holy Spirit) who would "teach us all things!" WHEN did He send Comforter WHO would "put His laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts?" On the Day of Pentecost in Acts 2:2! Thereafter, Jesus (The Holy Spirit, for Jn 14:26 said He would be sent IN HIS NAME) began speaking through the Apostles telling us what we must do for salvation! Does anyone know this? Does anyone do this? How, then, can you be "TRUE" Christians if not practicing (Jesus' Doctrine or the gospel of Christ) and what Jesus died for? (Galatians 1:6-9) He died so we could have a right to "the tree of life," for salvation, gave us the "gift" of mercy, and sent us a Helper (The Holy Spirit), yet everyone is throwing His Gift back in His face by following "governmental religion" and not "studying" for themselves!
Lord, How Mercy on our souls!

There's a lot of going back and forth about how Christians are this that or another. Yet no one ever pins down exactly what specific belief it is that makes Christians delusional, or hateful or whatever. The fact is that not all Christians believe the same thing, and not even members of our own...

Does anyone else feel that organized religion is built on a foundation of making you feel guilty?I feel that in order for an organized religion to run successfully it must be predicated on the fact that you must feel guilty on a number of levels. Guilty if you: 1. Aren't coming to church. 2. Don't...
