How do hear God!

I have heard people say say they hear God speaking to them! Often I wonder if they hear is actual voice or if they hear what he has to say through their convictions in their heart and the word they read in the bible!

Also when this is said by believers I have seen that it makes the non-believers as well as the knew converts think less than because they have not had a spiritual awaking as such!

Do Christians truly understand what it means when another brother and sister says God spoke to them?

And do you think it is misleading to say God spoke to you?

I communicate or speak with god a lot and that's how all poets write their poetry or book.God writes through them and that's why a holy book is called the word of god. Was in a trance like state for years when I was writing.

God is not someone only outside of you but inside of you, your very core is god. Sudden insights to signs is how he communicates with us.Meditation is a  fantastic way to communicate with him. smile

Not bad, but I'm afraid it won't work. To hear god you just have to have a minute silence...   I'm not a believer but when I do that someone always start to talk to me:)

God speaks in many ways.  Through His Word, through dreams, through our friends/loved ones, impressions on our heart  .....

Spend Quiet Time with Him and listen. You will get a response.

James 4:8 Draw Near to God and He'll draw near to you.

Psalm 46:10 - Be still and know that I am God  (Even if you are busy in the day, you could take time out to be quiet before Him).

It certainly helps in making wise Decisions. Proverbs 3 - Acknowlege Him in all your ways and He shall direct your paths.

Be still and know that I am God.
This philosophy exists in Hinduism as well only be still and you know I am god refers to god is you.Stillness will dissolve all your egos and attachments and take you to your core which is god.
This is also related to the text from The Holy Bhagwat Gita" One who sees inaction in action and action in inaction, he is a wise man."

      I keep asking for signs.

"So often I have asked you to show me a sign,
Thus I remember you as divine." smile

God speaks to Us and our hearts tell us what God is saying,
i would like to share my own experience that while i was out of my house I was so much upset and sat on the hill and started sharing with God all of my problems and automatically tears came out from my eyes, then my heart gave replies me of those questions or conversations i did myself by believing that GOD is listening me because GOD is everywhere and listens everyone...

Tell me then. Why does your god do nothing for all those innocents who suffer, or stay the hands of religious fanatics who start wars and kill children. If your god is so bloody awesome, how come this world is like it is. This planet is no advertisement for a god!

My personal belief is that god speaks to us through his written word.... there have been times when god has spoken directly to people, I have read accounts in the bible about that, ... My belief is now that Jesus is the mediator between  god and man, and when I pray, I always say through jesus Christ at the end......

I can't go here on this one. This is a question in which another person could not provide evidence of an actual conversation from God. This is 2009, and the best one could hope for is "hearsay".

I might agree that a person may believe they hear the word from God come to the consciousness, after reading from a holy book, praying, or dwelling on the written passages. It is their word against mine, and I won't deny they have the right to express. I just can not accept it as true for me. As for God's word being scribed by someone else...Why is there no other written documentation from other people besides those in the bible? The same might be true for Jesus, no personal writings that I am aware except that written by others.

It does not anger me if I hear someone saying "God told me so", except when it is used in defense for hideous crimes and violence. Other than that, I leave that individual to whatever comforts them.
