I think the Westminster Shorter Catechism hit it: To glorify God AND enjoy Him.  All the rest follows after that, good, bad, and seemingly indifferent.

One must have a God to serve, a woman to love, children to raise, and the hope of glory. Obey he word and He will generate the rest.

Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, as stated in the Declaration of Independence.  The ability to think and act for one's self, choose a profession - marry the person you love, spend your free time as you wish - are all the things in life that really matter. When human being cross the line living either as machines or animals, life ceases to have meaning.
