The Catholic Church and practicing Catholic families have an Advent wreath-three purple and one white candle.  I know longer practice Catholicism, so I cannot recall the symbolism of each, however, once a week on Sunday a new candle is lit.  This is progressive so that by the end of those four weeks all four candles are burning at the same time.

Yes Advent wreaths are great - I believe that some other liturgical Churches use them as well in addition to Catholics. I've never seen w/ 3 purple and 1 white candle though - I always saw one pink! Interesting.

Could be a regional tradition or something - I've always seen 3 purple and 1 pink (lit on the third week), and then all of the candles replaced with red or white at Christmas.
