Why was "apostles" added in the New Living Translation (NLT) instead of "witnesses"?
The Bible clearly forbids adding or taking away from scripture. Acts 10:39 has been added to. In the NLT “apostles’ has been added. The KJV reads – “we are witnesses of all things which he did”. The NLT reads – “we apostles are witnesses of all he did”. Adding Apostles changes the meaning. Why was “apostles” added?
a lot more than the word "apostles" was added when the NT was being compiled. for example, the story of the woman who was caught in adultery was not added to the gospel of john for a couple centuries. Additionally the gospel of Mark originally ended with the crucifixion - the resurrection story was added later as well.
The word apostle refers to people who actually saw the resurrected Christ. When you hear of churches where they have people they refer to as "apostles", chances are that they have no idea what they are talking about.

So, the "Witness" of the raised Messiah is an Apostle, some of which saw him while he actually lived.
That is the scholastic answer, and the fact on the matter!
