All I know of them is through the Dan Brown's book Angels & Demons :-)
That it was founded by Galileo Galilei, and others, as an enlightened reaction to persecution by the Catholic Church. They were initially based in Italy, but fled after four key members were executed by the Vatican. Apparently there are four churches to them in Rome, each representing one of the four elements.

There is no such thing as illuminati. A group bent on ruling the world. There are many powerful people in the world today but they are not grouped under an umbrella. Its just too hard to imagine a united front between so many people with varying interests.

I would tell you, but I am afraid they would find me.

I think that to a degree they are real, I have read and seen too much stuff to believe otherwise.  Looking back over the history of the world, it does seem that certain things happen to guide or push people one way or the other.  Done in little steps, little increments, taking 10 to 50 years at a time, seeing what people can stand.
