Why did it rain for forty days and forty nights in Noah's day? Why did Moses spend 40 years on the back side of the desert? 40 holds significance as a probationary period in which one is tested before God uses them to change the world!
In the original Greek text the word "many" is the same as 40. So you could also say Jesus was in the desert for many days and night. It rained for many days and nights, etc.
He had to be tested by satan to prove He would not submit to the temptation and the fasting made Him to be weaker and more easily tempted and more likely to fail, which of course He did not as He was perfect and that is why He was able to fulfill the law and put it away.
