Is there something wrong with you that you cannot love people without a god?

Is there something wrong with people who don't need god to love?

Is there something wrong with people who can love the 'godless'?

    Why not just love?

I have nothing to say to this, except well done.

And there it should be left, but I have a feeling this could evolve into another religious debate... We just need to wait for the right/wrong people to get here...

      Hi Sandra,

For me, I love people because of God.
For me, it is natural to love God.
To me - we are all people and I try to be kind to everyone. Not all of my friends go to church or have any faith at all. Many of the people I have become friends with on HubPages are all over the map in what they do and don't believe. It isn't my job to prove what I believe or that I convince anyone to believe anything.
Every day I try to love people more than the day before. I try to treat people better than they treat me, because it helps me focus on the helping people.
         Take care, Holly

yes, our lives are meaningless and without purpose and we are incapable of loving anyone including our children, nature, pets, or ourselves because we are soluless heathens who will burn in hell for eternity.

(that is how smug christians (not all christians - there are some really nice ones out there) view people who do not believe in the christian god).

I think that is spot on. Most atheists and other non believers have religious family members and have agreed to disagree with them. You have said directly what some keep trying to sell. That we are somehow unable to love because we do not follow their belief leaving many astonished at how anyone could come to such a concluion! smile soulless heathens indeed! smile

    God is everything good.

There is no Good without God.

Loving Good for others is loving God.

You cannot love good for others without God.

For God is the goodness in you.

The Son of Good is Truth.

    Truth is the Christ.

If a man still prophesies, his parents, father and mother, shall say to him, "You shall not live, because you have spoken a lie in the name of the Lord." When he prophesies, his parents, father and mother, shall thrust him through.   (Zechariah 13:3 NAB)

      Joh 3:16-20
16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17  For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
18  He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
19  And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. (emphasis mine.)
20  For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

Liking someone is a feeling. To love someone is a choice, and it's genuine when it's not motivated by personal liking.

I think people need a God to love because the human capacity for love depends on looking beyond ourselves and directing our benevolence outward.

    1. marinealways24 profile image60
marinealways24posted 14 years agoin reply to this

This was pretty deep. Is this the main reason people choose to believe in a God is for purpose beyond themselves?

      1. Valerie F profile image59
Valerie Fposted 14 years agoin reply to this

I only said that's a reason people need God. I'm not sure, but I have reason to suspect that the main reason people believe in God is because they interpret a variety of things and events as evidence that God is real.

        1. marinealways24 profile image60
marinealways24posted 14 years agoin reply to this

Faith is not evidence. Logic is evidence. I think you hit something on the purpose though. I think many choose to believe in something higher than whats known through faith simply to fill a purpose for life.

                Is it really love then?

Which one is greater.  A love that doesn't want revenge or a love that manifest vengeance for what they love?

Love is definitely an aspect.  He killed my kid, now I will kill him back.

Or, he killed my kid yet I know he is someone elses kid.  I may be very angry and miserable and think of all sorts of tortures I could to someone that would take what I love off the face of the planet, yet I am compelled enough out of love for life that doing so would hurt another innocent person.

If this were so then it wouldn't happen.  God himself, according to the bible is also a murderer.

Not really trying to get into a debate about that though especially when you believe that the only way you can love is to love god.

Then why bring it up? God, being the Creator of the Universe has the right to do anything. We don't. The act of murder is the ultimate in playing God with another person's life. Usurping divine authority.

Love is not dependent on any one person or entity. Love is a concept that exists all on its own. And both good and evil people are equally capable of love. For instance, there have been leaders who were ruthless towards their people, yet very loving and caring towards their family. Conversely, there have been leaders who were very benevolent and caring towards their people, yet neglectful and indifferent towards their family. Nothing is black and white. Life is never that simple. And humans in general are far too complicated to be defined by only one word or concept.
