I have heard that the Mongels practiced a form of Paganism, while I have also heard that they were Muslims. Which is true?

To my knowledge the most prominent Eastern Horde that practiced Muslim as their religion was the Moors during 7th and 8th centuries.  They swept across North Africa, conquered Sicily, Morocco and Spain before launching an invasion of France.  They were turned back by the army of Charles "the Hammer" Martel in 721 near modern day Tours.  People say that victory preserved most of Europe for Christianity.
