It is easier for my friends from the Western world to talk as you have written, but if you can live in Maiduguri for just one week and still hold on to your theory, I will follow your answer.

Boko Haram (Western education is forbidden) - the basis of this group is wrong. Illiterate leaders cause blunders like this but it is not what islam teaches. i never heard of Maiduguri before but it definitely is a shame to see what has been done.

It is unreasonable to assert that a devil exists. Man exists, that much is reasonable to believe. In the light of such brutality and savagery it is good to blame a 'devil' that way we, as humans do not have to take responsibility. "The devil made me do it."
Joseph Stalin and other Atheist leaders have butchered millions, not in the cause of a religious deity, but in the cause of a secular deity, government. Religion is not the cause or the lack of deity belief the cause. The cause is the blatant desire of a very few to control all others, using whatever means or motivation necessary.
Religion or secular religion is a motivator for the ignorant, dependent and insecure. It becomes a cause greater then themselves. It provides an identity,  a purpose. It is like going into a bar, "Where every one knows your name." We are pack animals and we look for the alpha male to lead. Perhaps, one day we will teach our children to be independent, to have a strength of character, to think rationally and free of such dependence on the alpha personalities.

I have heard the line "the devil made me do it" so many times in the muslim world when "religious person" is caught in the act. the worst thing about it is that you do not even see the sorrow on their face. It is a sad and shameful truth.

Islam doesn't take delight in killing people. Certain Islamic extremists seem to put the emphasis on killing to draw media attention to their cause. Judging Islam based on these people would be like judging Christianity based on the followers of the Westboro Baptist Church.

Both religions were founded on the ability to spread the doctrine by virtue of the sword. Those who do not use a sword are the exception.

What on earth is their 'cause' that precious lives must be wasted to draw media attention?

Power over others and all that comes with that. For the minions a purpose for life and they do not have by themselves.
