How can doomsday preppers be religious?

I've watched a handful of episodes of the show 'Doomsday Preppers' and I noticed that quite a few of these people were taking religious symbols with them into their various bunkers. There are two things that confuse me about this. The first is; if one believes in an afterlife, and their religion is correct, shouldn't they not fear the end of the world? And second, most of these doomsday preppers assume that the general masses will turn into murdering thieves at the first sign of instability. But, shouldn't one who is religious not assume the worst about people?

Let us say, either they are fanatically religious or they are just plain divorced from logic and reality.  There are people who believe that the world is in a malaise and that there is no hope of the world ever improving its state.  Maybe there are other fundamentalists who see the modern world as becoming very out of control because in their purview, this world is diametrically opposed to what God "has intended".

There is also a psychological explanation for being a doomsday prepper.  For one reason or another, they are failures in the current society.  So they rationalize their failure and/or inability to cope with the present society by denigrating this society, feeling that it is corrupt and that doomsday will, in one form or another, cleanse or destroy society.  There are even more extreme elements who anticipate the tribulation and rapture, they contend that this society is proverbially leprous while they are the pure ones who will be saved.  Can we say.........NUTSO?  Say NUTSO after me, everybody!

“Prepping” is a new term for survival, it is instinct to protect family. Survival through human history includes cannibalism and theft. Scripture indicates few people will survive, it  suggests that they will live underground until after tribulation.

Yeah I think most aren't as intelligent as the average bear. Most are uneducated or undereducated and lack the confidence that living well in society would give them. Many are fundamentalist Christians whose preachers try to scare the Hell out of them.  AND they listen to Rush Limbaugh too much.

Perhaps, when one considers the story of Noah and the ark, there may be an understanding of the Prepper mindset. Noah was a Prepper and devotedly a believer and he saved humanity. What better role  model can one have?
As for the idea that the masses will turn into murdering thieves in the event of a national or world wide catastrophic event, that is probably correct, especially in the urban areas. How long this would take is dependent on the situation. Within 24 hours food stores could be emptied of food and if gasoline, water and power is effected Marshall law would be quickly enacted, which may exacerbate the problem. If there is a breakdown of government services, military authority, I would hope you have a gun.
There is a reason for the term, human animal.
