What do you think the role of hymns is in contemporary worship?
Tremendously significant and I dare say essential for rapid progress. My Spiritual teacher wrote 24,000 songs and we sing regularly and give concerts all over the world. All sincere teachers say that music is the language of the Soul, but it must be soulful music, not heavy rock or pop.
These gratify the mind but do not feed the Soul. Why do we worship? The purpose of life is to glorify God; to praise; to adulate ....
Again, the Soul is in isolation, and needs all the help it can get, hence what we call Spiritual Practices: Breathing, chanting, praying, meditation and other forms. Reading scriptures and music which is crucial!
How can we best love God? By being receptive to His Spirit. Music inspires receptivity and the descent of the Higher Forces (Grace) without which, very little, if any, can be done. Music soothes our Souls, comforts us and inspires inner beauty as well as augmenting Love. Nice question, Natasha.
