Syracuse Football scores a trophy win!
SU wins at West Virginia!
Syracuse University Football has been resting in the sewer system for over 5 years! Paul Pasqualoni was fired for having several sub-par teams and a less than impressive bowl record in his final years. after he left, the new head coach, Greg Robinson allowed this team to bottom out like never before. Syracuse fired him as well, and then started the "desperate search" for a new leader. After "vetting" many prospects, former S.U. Football player, Doug Marrone was hired to rebuild and start over.
Though Doug's team went 4-8 in his first season, the fans could tell that this program was getting better. Marrone had to make several tough choices, but did so wisely. Many of us believed that it would take several years to get us back on the winning track and out of the bottom spot in the Big East. The S.U. fans have been very pleasantly surprised that in year 2 our team is now 5-2 after scoring good wins at Akron, S.F.U., and a tremendous win today at West Virginia! As I predicted, Syracuse will be playing in a bowl game this season!
Though QB Ryan Nassib (6'2 224lbs) had a bad game, The Orange was able to win 19-14 infront of a hostile WV crowd! Nassib, who is the only QB is S.U. history to throw for 5 TDs in one game, was a woeful 5-15 today against a very strong WV defense. To his credit however, Nassib did not make any costly mistakes like an interception or a fumble. That is why the Orange are 5-2. They get a lead that is higher than a field goal and they run the clock on offense and bury you with a deep punt. Then on defense they shut "you" down!!!!!
Syracuse beats its opponents in 2 ways. Carter and Bailey, their 2 outstanding running backs keep the chains and the clock moving, while the defense ( the Orange Curtain) shut down even good offenses like they did today on the road. Smith, WV's QB was harassed under the tremendous pressure that S.U. brought, and he folded! 3 interceptions and 5 sacks were forced by the Invaders in Orange. Even though the Orange offense struggled getting to the end zone, the defense dominated enough for our team to pick up, perhaps the biggest win since #1 Nebraska fell at the dome in 84.
Doug Marrone has done a great job rebuilding and wins like this, not only prove that, but help bring in top recruits. Until this year, S.F.U. had a 5 game winning streak against the Orange and WV had an 8 game winning streak! The road warriors of the Big East are back! Congratulations to Coach Marrone, his staff, and players for building a dominating defense and restoring pride and honor in the city of Syracuse!
