What's the Secret to Getting a Fire Going?

We bought a bunch of wood this year in preparation for doing the whole firepit thing in the back yard with the kids.  What are the secrets to getting these things going quick?

Get someone else to do it - that way you can beat up on them if the fire won't burn.

Seriously though, the most important thing is to make sure the wood is dry. Start the fire with crumpled newspaper and light kindling, adding slightly heavier wood as the fire progresses, until you're able to add logs. Allow about 30 to 40 minutes to get a really good blaze going.
